Robert Syme of Temple Is- rael refrained from reciting a prayer over the bread, leaving it to all to do the praying in their chosen ways. Father Malcolm Carron of the University of Detroit gave the benediction, also interdeminationally. Can- tor Louis Klein of Cong. Bnai Moshe led in the sing- ing of the national anthems. Rodkey Craighead, president of Detroit Bank and Trust, the honoree who was awarded the Bnai Brith Gold Medal for Humanitarian Serv- ices, was acclaimed by the 800 in attendance for his devotions to many causes. Jack Spitzer, national president of Bnai Brith, who made the presentation, added to his encomia per- sonal reminiscences of the movement's labors to enroll youth for public services and devotions to the nation and its highest aims. As a former president of AZA, Aleph Zadik Aleph, the Bnai Brith youth movement for boys, he recalled the early stages of the efforts which have grown to high- est aims. Speaking for the youth groups were Jill Lub- lin, president of the Bnai Brith Hillel Foundation at Wayne State University; Kevin Gersten, president of the Great Lakes AZA Coun- cil; and Beth Berman, president of the Great Lakes BBG Council. Craighead, in his address accepting the Bnai Brith In- ternational Humanitarian Award, spoke of the growth of cultural aims in Detroit, paying honor to the city fathers for their dedicated labors. Adding to the honors ac- corded Craighead was an address by Allan Schwartz, a former honoree. Edward Giblin, chairman of the board of Excello Corp., who presided, spoke with admiration for the honoree, as did Walter J. McCarthy, president of De- troit Edison Co., who was the general dinner chair- man, and Federal Judge Avern Cohn. David L. Bittker, chair- man of the Bnai Brith Foundation Committee, which supervises allocation of aid to the youth groups, gave an outline of projected plans for future activities by the movement. More than 60 notables in the city and state were introduced by Marc Avery of WCZY Radio as they ascended to the dais.
