In behalf of the family in Detroit, Meyer Cooper presented ttis brother with a framed certificate of inscription in the Jewish National Fund Golden Book in Jerusalem. Senator Byrd paid honor to the retiring rabbi in a special message inserted in the Congressional Record. In it, he included the par- ticipating notables in the testimonial functions for Rabbi Cooper. Senator Byrd's statement read in part: "Rabbi Samuel Cooper . . . after 49 years of serving his congregation and the Charleston community, is retiring. This weekend, hundreds of Rabbi Cooper's congregants, friends and admirers are coming to- gether in Charleston to bid this distinguished spiritual leader farewell, and I want to add my voice to their acclaim. "Among the many re- sponsibilities that Rabbi Cooper has accepted (in addition to his congrega- tional duties) are the chairmanship of the West Virginia. Human Rights Committion and the Charleston Housing Council and membership on the board of trustees of the American Red Cross and the Rabbinical Council of America. "I commend Rabbi Cooper for his years of unselfish service to the Bnai Jacob Synagogue and to Charles- ton. Rabbi Cooper is depart- ing a familiar field of labor for new challenges ... may he go assured Of the heartfelt appreciation of the thousands of people who his influence has touched."
