spirit of friendship and
cameraderie" among Iraq's
Jewish and Muslim intel-
lectuals, he states.
However, even a liberal
and democratically-
inclined associate told him
after the rout of the Arab
armies in Palestine in 1948:
"The Arabs have a very long
memory. They are not likely
ever to forget this humilia-
tion. -
At various points, the

firms that Jewish-Muslim
relationships have not al-
ways been hostile, that good
feeling has frequently
existed.
In
"Schizophrenic

Turkey," Dr. George E.
Gruen, director of Middle
East affairs at the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee,
who wrote his doctoral
dissertation on Turkish-
Israeli relations, asserts
that the 20,000 Jews in
that country are worried
about the possibility of
political upheaval that
could directly affect their
status and security.
"The steady deterioration
in Turkey's relations with
Israel in the past year, re-
sulting mainly from pres-
sure by Arab and Islamic
countries, as well as the
growing closeness between
Turkey and those nations,

are other major causes for
Jewish concern," Dr. Gruen
wrote.
Why should a military
regime in Turkey that
shares Israel's pro-Western
orientation and appreciates
the value of Israel in the
regional military balance
follow a policy that in es-
sence submits to Arab and
Islamic pressures? The
basic motivation, he be-
lieves, is economic. In ex-

Thanksgiving Day

By MADOLYN ROSENTHAL
Thanksgiving Day is here
And memories make it very dear,
We think of days gone by
And remember our childhood with a sigh.
We have so much here to be thankful for —
But being mortals, we ask for more.
So be thankful for what you've got
Because here in America you have a lot —
So listen, as I say,
God Bless America and be thankful
On this Thanksgiving Day.
