Evron to Resign as Ambassador JERUSALEM (JTA) — Reports that Israel's am- bassador to the U.S., Ep- hraim Evron, will retire in January were confirmed by a Foreign Ministry spokes- man. Evron informed Premier Menahem Begin and Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir several months ago that he planned to leave the foreign service after a career of,33 years. According to the Foreign Ministry, Begin and Shamir "expressed their profound appreciation for the ability and devotion to duty demonstrated by Ambas- sador Evron in representing the state. Mr. Evron's suc- cessor will be named in the near future," the Foreign Ministry said. and Security Committee. Arens has refused to comment so far on re- ports that he would be posted to Washington. In- formed sources said that one serious obstacle to his nomination is his con- sistent opposition to the current peace process. EPHRAIM EVRON The favored candidate to succeed him appears to be Moshe Arens of Likud's Herut faction who is chairman of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs Jewish Leaders Protest Visit of Yasir Arafat to Japan ....bat especially of Lubavitch Foundation. NEW YORK (JTA) — A delegation of business and community leaders led by New York Jewish Commu- nity Relations Council Preisdent Laurence A. Tisch met last week with Ambassador Moriyuki Mol- tono, the consul general of Japan in New York, to pro- test the recent visit to Japan by Palestine Liberation Organization chief, Yasir Arafat. Speaking on behalf of JCRC and its 30 member agencies, Tisch asserted that the Japanese Deception for Arafat "must of neces- sity cast a shadow on U.S.- Japan relations and undermine U.S. efforts to bring peace to the Middle East. "When the head of one of the world's great industrial democracies meets with Arafat — and gets nothing in return — such contacts constitute a notable politi- cal victory for the PLO that can only encourage its lead- ers to believe that terror and intransigence do indeed pay," Tisch declared, and went on 'to term the recent visit a "slap in the face to Israel." Ambassador Moltono claimed that oil was only one factor behind the visit, asserting that his government's central motivation was to. have Arafat come in contact with Japanese public opinion so he'd know the Japanese nation insisted that Israel's right to exist be recognized as well as the autonomy of the Palestinian people. Moltono emphasized that the PLO had not been ac- corded official diplomatic status and that his govern- ment had not yielded _an inch on any formal factors leading to further recogni- tion. Arens voted in the Knes- set against the Camp David agreements, against ratifi- cation of the peace treaty with Egypt and, most re- cently, against the Multina- tional Force and Observers (MFO) which is to police Sinai after Israel completes its final withdrawal from the peninsula next April. In the event that Arens is named Israel's next ambas- sador to the U.S. two candi- dates have emerged as possible successors to head the Knesset's Foreign Af- fairs and Security Commit- tee. They are Eliahu Ben- Elissar, Israel's former am- bassador to Egypt and Yosef Rom. Both are MKs repre- senting Likud's Herut fac- tion. Israeli Minister Visits Paris PARIS (JTA) — Israeli Deputy Premier and Minis- ter -of Agriculture Simcha Erlich went to Paris this week for talks with the French ministers of Ag- riculture and European Af- fairs.
