Senate Abortion Subcommittee Hears Siegman WASHINGTON — The dispute over abortion is not between a moral and an amoral approach, but be- tween two conflicting moral approaches that are "equally grounded in pro- found religious conviction," according to Henry Sieg- man, executive director of the American Jewish Con- gress. Testifying before the sub- committee on the Constitu- tion of the U.S. Senate's Committee on the Judiciary, Siegman last week said proposed con- stitutional amendments giving Congress and indi- visual states the right to limit abortions would allow government to "take sides" in the conflict between two equally-valid moralities. He urged that the amend- ment proposals be turned down. The amendments, if passed, would raise serious problems for Jews, since, under Jewish law, the life of the mother takes- prece- dence, if the fetus up to the moment of birth and even during the birth proc- ess itself threatens the life of the mother, he ex- plained. In such cases, abor- tion is not a matter of choice but of "religious obliga- tion." NEW YORK — Shlomo Ariav has been appointed director of the Israel Aliya Center in the United States and Canada.
