Originally founded five years ago by parents look- ing for an alternative to the strictly Orthodox on the one hand, and the typically sec- ular Israeli school on the other, the school has been singled out as an example of a modern approach to Jewish education. Minister of Education Zevulun Hammer desig- nated it "the model school" and asserted that he hopes to see many such schools in- itiated in the next few years. The concept began with a group of parents who wanted the sort of good Jewish education for their children which would bridge the gap between the rigidly defined "religious" and "non-religious" streams in the current Israeli educa- tional system. The idea was originally fostered by new immigrant families from the United States and other English-speaking coun- tries, but soon found a strong response among sec- ond- and third-generation Israelis who also felt "some- thing missing" in their chil- dren's education, according to school principal Barbara Levine. The Orthodox estab- lishment perceived the suggestion as a threat to their control of religious education and, Mrs. Levine said, -fought fiercely to prevent the World Zionist Press school's inception, with demonstrations, letters to parents and organized opposition in the political framework. Neverthe- less, the parents group found a sympathetic ear for their demands within the Ministry of Educa- tion. Making use of this privilege, the parents insti- tuted a new kind of religious emphasis within the ordi- nary approach to primary education. Representatives of the Ministry of Education visited and observed the ex- perimental project and ap- proved it as a legitimate op- tion for "secular" schools in Israel. Known informally as the "Massorati School," Mrs. Levine emphasized that the name was chosen before the Conservative Movement of Judaism officially changed their name also to "Mas- sorati" (Traditional) and she said the school has no connection and does not es- pouse Conservative or any other brand of Judaism. Noting that Judaism has always been "pluralistic," Mrs. Levine, who has re- ceived degrees from the Jewish Theological Semi- nary and Columbia Univer- sity and who served on the Board of Jewish Education in the United States before making aliya in 1969, pointed out that even within Orthodox circles there are a variety of groups, each of which claims superiority over all the others. The school's unique approach, she said, was to encourage an actively-questioning per- sonal experience of the traditional Jewish way of life, to make the ancient scriptures and rituals of Judaism meaningful within the life of the stu- dents. The school opened in 1976 with 33 students in the first through the third grade. The school now has some 300 pupils in grades 1-7. However, all the classes are cramped into two asbestos barracks which are de- signed to hold a maximum of only half the current enrollment. Three years ago the city agreed to construct a new building for the school, if the parents could raise half the costs of the project. Al- though the administration's demand was completely un- conventional in terms of new school buildings, Mrs. Levine personally went to the United States on a fund-raising mission and, to Adoption Rules TEL AVIV (ZINS) -- The Israeli Ministry of Social Affairs recently called a press conference to an- nounce that Israeli children could not be placed for adop- tion with families not living in Israel. It can take up to several years to adopt a child in Is- rael. Israeli statistics show that 90 percent of the chil- dren placed for adoption are born out of wedlock. Get your enemies to read your works in order to mend them. INSTANT everyone's surprise, suc- ceeded in finding the re- quired support. Businessman Samuel Frankel agreed to contrib- ute half of the $300,000 Mrs. Levine needed, and she managed to raise the rest from concerned individuals sympathetic to the needs of Jewish education. After protracted discussions, the project was put on the budget though the price of the building meanwhile in- creased so much that only half of the necessary classrooms can be included in the planning. The first stage is contracted to be built within the next year. With 10 percent of the student body coming from culturally deprived neighborhoods in Jerusalem and more than 80 percent of the current enrollment from second- and third-generation Is- raeli families, the school has proved that it is not merely a wild notion of new immigrants to the country.
