Technion Nears One-Third Mark
of Michigan Dormitory Drive
It is almost a year since
the Detroit Chapter of the
American Technion Society
launched a $600,000 fund-
raising drive to build a
Michigan Dormitory at
Technion — Israel Institute
of Technology in Haifa.
The project, part of the
Technion's $14 million stu-
dent housing program, is in-
tended to ease a critical
housing shortage at the
university. Sam Rich,
chairman of the ATS Michi-
gan Dormitory Committee,
will announce at Sunday's
Detroit Chapter dinner at
Adat Shalom Synagogue,
that more than 30 percent of
the needed funds have been
raised thus far.
"The housing problem at
the Technion is severe and
the longer it takes to build
these dormitories, the more
severe the problem will be;
the more students will be af-
fected and discouraged,"
Rich said in advance of the
. . . where art doesn't
stop on the walls.

Some 70 percent of
Technion's students
come from outside the
Haifa area and on-
campus accommodations
are now available for
only one-third, or 1,900
students. Because of the
general shortage of hous-
ing in Israel, the cost of
renting rooms off-
campus can be several
times higher than tuition
costs, which are sub-
sidized by the govern-
ment.
Guests at the chapter's
33rd annual dinner, to be
held 6 p.m. Sunday at Adat
Shalom, will welcome guest
speaker Gen. Amos Horev,
president of Technion.
