"Zubin Mehta was right and wrong about Richard Wagner: Young Israeli musicians are being denied access to the work of one of the most important compos- ers of all time, one who influenced almost every composer who has come after him. "Without a deep knowl- edge and understanding of his work no musical educa- tion is complete. In deplor- ing this fact, Mr. Mehta was right. "He was wrong, how- ever, in surreptitiously seeking to slip a Wagner work into an Israel Philharmonic Orchestra concert, thereby using Israel's supreme national artistic instrument to give de facto recognition to Wagner's music. "Opposition to its per- formance will remain for so long as there is one survivor of the Holocaust to recall that, not only was Wagner regarded by Hitler as Mas- ter of Nazi Music, but that Wagner was also a vicious anti-Semite who helped to create the atmosphere of which the Holocaust was the terrible climax. "It is true that Israelis drive German-made cars and listen to that same Is- rael Philharmonic on German-made radios. But there is surely a distance. between these products and the appeal to the mind and soul so especially to be found in music. "Mr. Mehta would have made — can still make — a contribution to young Israel's appreciation of Wagner as musician by teaching students master-classes in his work. "For those others who feel they are deprived, Wagner recordings are widely available. But Wagner in public performance can wait a little while longer. Israel, at this moment, does not need a musical divide to add to her others."
