Rabbi Kahane was ar-
rested in Toronto for im-
properly entering
Canada without an entry
permit. He was-required
to obtain the special
permit because of his de-
portation from Canada in
1971 for planning a
demonstration against
the visit to Canada of
Soviet Premier Alexei
Kosygin.
In Britain last week,
Kahane was banned by the
Home Office after right-
wing and left-wing ex-
tremist groups announced
plans to demonstrate at a
planned Kahane speech. A
Home Office official said
Kahane was banned be-
cause his entry "was not
conducive to the public
good."

More than 2,000 persons
were at Temple Beth El
Sunday to hear a talk by
Sen. Henry M. Jackson
(D-Wash.).

Rabbi Richard C. Hertz of-

guest of Mr. and Mrs. Paul
Zuckerman.
In his remarks to the
gathering, Sen. Jackson
stated in part:
"Israel is an indispensa-
ble stragetic asset to the
West. No other nation in the
Middle East has its strong
pro-Western orientation, its
basic stability, and its sub-
stantial, effective military
forces. It is high time our
government took advantage
of what the Israelis can offer
— in ways acceptable to
them.
"My friends, you and I
fought for human rights be-
fore it became fashionable. I
am confident that we will
continue even after the
faint-hearted have tired of
the struggle.
"We can take genuine
satisfaction in the fact that
tens of thousands of people
— Jews, Christians and
others — have escaped from
captivity because of the
Jackson amendment on
freer immigration. For
thousands of others who
want to emigrate, the
Jackson amendment is still
their principal hope — their
lifeline. I, for one, will op-
pose any weakening of the
Jackson provisions either
by amendment or interpre-
tation.
"Those provisions consti-
tute absolutely indispensa-
