On the western outskirts
of Jerusalem on the way to
the Hadassah hospital lies
Ein Karem — a picturesque
and serene village striking
and unique in its old-time
beauty.
Occasionally
churCh
bells, children's laughter
and prayers from the local
synagogues break the deep
silence permeating the val-
ley in which the village
rests among the hills. Its
flora — the silvery olive
trees, the vines, the figs, the
pomegranates and the al-
monds — emphasize its bi-
blical character, as if time
has been halted in the vil-
lage, holy to millions of
Christians all over the
world.
Christians believe that it
was in Ein Karem, tradi-
tionally regarded as the
"City of Judah" mentioned
in the Gospels, that John
the Baptist, precursor of
Jesus, was born to Elisabeth
and Zacharias. To this vil-
lage they believe, came

Mary of Nazareth carrying
the Holy Child, to visit her
cousin Elisabeth.
Thousands of pilgrims
visit the village's numer-
ous churches, convents,
spires and minarets.
These places of worship,
as well as 'a number of
small synagogues, mingle
with rough-stone rebuilt
and modernized
dwellings, gardens and
reclaimed terraces,
whose architecture re-
tains the ancient beauty
of the place. Striking, too,
are the Franciscan
Church of the Nativity of
St. John, Mary's well, the
Franciscan Church of the
Visitation, etc.
A new municipal develop-
ing and preservation plan
for Ein Karem has recently
caused turbulence in the
serene village and con-
troversy among its peaceful
inhabitants— 250 families.
The residents are mainly
immigrants from Yemen
and Morocco who moved in
1948 into the houses the
Arabs deserted, after the
1948 war, along with ar-
tists,journalists and nature
lovers who prefer the vil-
lage's rural quietness to
other more bustling
neighborhoods in the city.
Most artists and intellectu-
als moved to the village
after the Six-Day War. They
rebuilt the forlorn Arab
dwellings with great care,
love and enthusiasm, turn-
ing the once abandoned
Arab village into one of the
most beautiful villages in
Israel.
According to its oppo-
nents, the program
threatens to destroy the
special, biblical, holy, inti-
mate and peaceful quality of
Ein Karem. Hence, deter-
mined and angry, they have
organized to fight it.
Arie Rachamimov, the in-
itiator and architect of the
program, feels Ein Karem
lacks communal services.
"It lacks a proper system of
Occupation Film
Seen by French
PARIS (JTA) — French
State Television last
weekend showed a 12-
year-old film, "The Sorrow
and the Pity," which de-
scribes the average Fren-
chman's reaction, or as
many say "lack of reaction,"
to the Nazi occupation of
France and the deportation
of most of the country's
Jews.
Though the film was shot
in 1969 by top European di-
rector Max Ophuls,
France's three television
channels refused to show it
and most country-wide dis-
tributors banned it from
mass audience cinemas.
One of the first decisions
of the new television man-
agement, appointed after
last May's Socialist victory,
was to acquire the film for
national programming in
prime time.
The noblest mind the best
contentment has.
paved roads, drainage and
sufficient street lighting,"
according to Rachamimov.
"All these shortcomings
have created throughout
the years a process of
environmental deteriora-
tion whose accumulative ef-
fect is destructive.
"Increased individual
building and a demand
by more people to move
to Ein Karem made it
necessary in 1977 to pre-
pare the development
and preservation pro-
gram?' He adds that it
should be carried out
with minimum delay.
Those opposed to the de-
velopment plan claim that
adding 200 houses to Ein
Karem's 350 existing
houses would abolish the
village and destroy its
uniqueness.
It is a small, holy and
quiet place. It is the only
place in which you can feel,
smell, hear ... a hamlet as it
was thousands of years
ago," according to Walter
Zanger, an opponent of the
plan. "There is no industry
here. Moreover, we have
achieved integration be-
tween people coming from
various backgrounds.
"The pressures put upon
us are enormous," Zanger
said. "The main pressure is
money. The authorities
want to make money in Ein
Karem. We would agree to
add 60-80 dwellings that
wouldn't destroy the social
structure and peace of the
village and turn it into an-
other bourgeois neighbor-
hood. But more than that is
out of the question."
