UNITED NATIONS
(JTA) — The UN General
Committee decided Tues-
day, at the request of the
Arab League, to include a
new item on the General
Assembly's agenda, titled
• "Israel's Decision to Build a
Canal Linking the Mediter-
ranean Sea to the Dead
Sea."
The new item will come
before the assembly in
about two weeks, after de-
bate in the Special Politi-
cal Committee. Yehuda
Blum, Israel's Ambassador
to the United Nations, ex-
pressed Israel's objection to
the decision, charging that
it is -another demonstra-
tion of the total Arab obses-
sion with Israel."
In another development
here Tuesday, Israel sub-
mitted to the UN
Secretariat a 60-page
"white paper" titled "The
Iraqi Nuclear Threat —
Why Israel had to Act," for
circulation here as a docu-

The 67-mile, $800 million
inter-seas canal i3 expected
to provide Israel with more
than 15 percent of her fu-
ture energy needs.
The commitment under-
taken by the Israel Bond
Organization to provide
seed money in the amount of
$100 million represents an
obligation of the highest

NEW YORK (ZINS) —
The number of Palestinian
refugees registered with the
United Nations Relief and
Works Agency rose 2.26
percent to 1,844,318 in the
year ending June 30.
UNRWA said that 834,000
refugees, or 45.2 percent of
the total, received basic ra-
tions, including flour, rice
sugar and cooking oil.
Fewer than a third of the
registered refugees were
living in the agency's 61
camps in Jordan, Lebanon,
Syria, and the West Bank ,
and the Gaza Strip.
