Englishman Is West's Link to Soviet Jews

JERUSALEM — Michael
Sherbourne doesn't seem
the sort of person to run up a
$3,000 phone bill. Yet the
63-yer-old new immigrant
from England hit that peak
once. All in a good cause.
According to an article by
Jody Bronse in Israel Scene
Magazine, during the past
10 years, Sherboume has
made some 5,000 calls to
Soviet Jewish activists.
He became one of the
main links between the
Soviet Jews and the West,
accumulating vast amounts
of information for use by
groups working on behalf of
Soviet Jewry.
Having spent 20 years
teaching himself Rus-
sian, Sherbourne was
asked by a voluntary
group in London to estab-
lish telephone contact
with Soviet Jews who
had been refused permis-
sion to emigrate to Israel.

phoning, if someone can be
found to replace the British
voluntary organization
which footed the bills.
But, notes Sherbourne, it
is getting harder to put calls
through. It was a relatively
easy matter in the early
days. "Technology overtook
the Soviets," says Sher-
bourne, referring to his abil-
.

ity to dial direct from Lon-
don to Moscow. Even when
the authorities caught on,
they tapped the conversa-
tions instead of cutting
them off.

Now, though, lines are
often cut as soon as foreign
calls arrive, and refuseniks
are increasingly reluctant
to risk losing their phones,
which they need for keeping
in touch with other re-
fuseniks and for private
needs.

first efforts on the tele-
phone, forcing the Russian
words onto his tongue. He
persisted with the phone
calls, though, and soon ac-
quired a measure of fluency.
Before long, his Jewish con-
tacts in Russia were debat-
ing his precise origin.

Early results from the
telephone calls were
encouraging and Sher-
bourne was given more
names and more tele-
phone numbers. In time,
he got to know the lead-
ing refuseniks and be-
came their main link with
the West. "My life began
to center around the re-
lease of Soviet Jewry."
Sherbourne retired from
his job as a high - school
teacher in 1979 and re-
cently immigrated to Israel.
He intends to continue ad-
vising British and interna-
tional groups on the prob-
lems of Soviet Jewry. One
current project he has set

Care Service has suc-
cessfully transferred a
number of premature
babies and infants suffering
from birth defects to receiv-
ing hospitals in the Tel Aviv
area.
The ambulance used by
the unit is a specially
adapted vehicle with a
sophisticated incubator sys-
tem complete with artificial
ventilation and resuscita-
tion equipment. The ambu-
lance, along with other
equipment for the neonatal
unit was made possible
through contributions from
RDA's U.S. support arm,
American Red Magen
David for Israel.
