AJCongress Hits
Domestic Policy
of Evangelicals

NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Congress
has issued a condemnation
of the evangelical right for
using religion as an instru-
ment of political coercion
and has pledged to oppose
the movement on many of
its domestic policies and
practices.
The condemnation came
in a resolution passed by the
governing council of the
AJCongress. It accused the
evangelical movement's
adherents of attempting to
intimidate when they can-
not persuade "by using the
size of their electronic con-
gregations and by threaten-
ing political reprisal
through the proliferation of
hit lists."
The AJCongress accused
the movement of claiming
for itself "an absolute moral
and political rectitude." It
also charged the "New
Right" with claiming not
only a moral majority but a
"moral monopoly."

"It's easy for a candidate to make promises. it's
tougher to keep them. Southfield's . . . City
Councilman, John Beras, however, is proving
to be a cut above the norm. Unlike some . . . in
the city Beras is willing to publicly admit to
problems in this area and he wants to do some-
thing about it. Beres has proved to be the most
innovative member of . . . Council."

Excerpt from Southfield Eccentric Editorial

Iron breaks stone; fire
melts iron; water extin-
guishes fire; clouds con-
sume water; the storm dis-
pels clouds; man withstands
the storm; fear conquers
man; wine banishes fear;
sleep overcomes wine, and
death is the master of sleep;
but charity saves even from
death.
