The Cardiac Rehabilita-
tion Program at Sinai Hos-
pital of Detroit recently
hosted a recognition and
awards dinner-dance to
honor program partici-
pants.
All patients who went
through any of the pro-
gram's three phases, and all
physicians who have re-
ferred patients, were in-
vited to the dinner at the
Jewish Community Center
in West Bloomfield.
Guest speaker was Dr.
Herman Hellerstein, an
authority on cardiac re-
habilitation who teaches at
Case-Western Reserve
University.
A special plaque was
- presented to Harry
Docks, a former patient
in the hospital-based por-
tion of the program, who
recently donated a
metabolic measurement
cart to the program.

Docks is a former partici-
pant in the hospital-based
Phase H of the three-phase
cardiovascular fitness and
rehabilitation program.
This comprehensive pro-
gram begins immediately
following a heart attack or
coronary bypass surgery.
Some participants have not
had problems, but are iden-
tified as "at risk."
The initial phase involves
calisthenics, walking and
intensive education about
the rehabilitation process.
After a few weeks at home,
during which patients are

The Open Window

By JOSEPH SHAPIRO

(Editor's Note: Mr. Shapiro, 91, is a resident of the
Jewish Home for Aged, Borman Hall, and is a fre-
quent contributor of poetry to The Jewish News.)
When you open your street window, what do you see
Traffic, traffic, of a great variety.
But, the view you get, is not always good
It's the weather that is really understood.

urged to continue light
calisthenic exercise and
progressive walking,
patients may return to
Sinai as outpatients for
Phase II. This four-week
exercise program involves
monitoring by an electro-
cardiogram and supervision
by Sinai's cardiac rehabili-
tation staff.
At the start of Phase II,
patients are given a battery
of tests, including a tread-
mill test to detemine the
heart's response to exercise
and the patient's peak fit-
ness level. The patients
then exercise at approx-
imately 80 percent of their
peak level.
The final phase of the
rehabilitation program
takes place at the Jewish
Community Center in
West Bloomfield and in-
cludes three one-hour
sessions of rigorous
exercise each week with
a spirited volleyball
game at the conclusion of
each session. About a
third of those who com-
plete Phase II move on to
the Phase III program.
Participants have their
blood pressure checked and
an electrocardiogram read-
ing taken at the start of
each session.
Last year Docks donated
$3,000 and two exercise
bicycles to the Phase H pro-
gram. These Air-Dyne bicy-
cle ergometers give patients
the opportunity to exercise
their arms and legs sepa-
rately or simultaneously.

Reaching from the "heavens" to the ground
There is a very large window, that is round.
From within that window, everything can be seen
Events of the past, that have already been.

The window I am referring to, is the world in which we live
Inside this window, sits the "Lord" blessings he gives.
We can look towards the sea, and the sky
But the large window reaches the "Most Very High."

If houses were made of glass, what could people say
They would have to look upward, and to the Lord would
pray.
For after all the world from which everything can be seen
We cannot hide, because everything the Lord has seen.
