Cohn, marking his 85th birthday, Nov. 11 at Adat Shalom Synagogue. Nov. 11 is the new date for the dinner announced by the Detroit Chapter of the American Jewish Commit- tee, sponsor of the testimo- nial dinner. Miller, Sol Eisenberg, Philip Stollman and Joyce Cohn. Rabbi Tanenbaum was the only rabbi at Vatican II. This past summer he pioneered an evangelical- Jewish dialogue. He has also spearheaded the Task Force on Soviet Jewry, which is an ongoing AJC project and the Visitor to Is- rael program for clergy and laymen of all faiths. Cohn will receive AJ- Committee's Human Rights Medallion. A graduate of Cass High School, Cohn entered the University of Michigan and received the degree of LLB in 1917. As a student at U-M, he was secretary of the Menora Society and president of the Hillel Foundation at the time of the erection of the present building at the university. The _ synagogue at U-M Hillel Foundation was named for his parents. In 1962, a branch of the United Hebrew Schools was named in honor of his par- ents. He served as vice president of that institution for many years. The Hillel Foundation at Wayne State University was named The Irwin I. Cohn Hall in a spe- cial tribute to Conn. A major participant in many movements, his chief interest for the last decade has been Chabad, the Lubavitch Hasidic move- ment. In 1966, the Council of Orthodox Rabbis of De- troit cited him for "out- standing dedicated leader- ship and a lifetime of charitable endeavors." He is - Michigan Chairman of the Central Organization for Jewish Education. Cohn is a former chair- man of the Allied Jewish Campaign of Detroit and a former chairman of the Is- rael Emergency Fund. For a quarter of a century, he has been secretary of Sinai Hos- pital. The Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit awarded him its Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award and he received the President's Club Award of Bnai Brith and the Distin- guished Service Award of the Jewish Theological Seminary. In 1968, he re- ceived an award of appre- ciation from the Syrian Or- thodox Church in recogni- tion of his "wise counsel and unwavering support." Cohn holds the title of honorary fellow of Bar-Ilan University and was named a science fellow of Yeshiva University. Irwin and Sad- die Cohn were also reci- pients of the Heritage Award of Yeshiva Univer- sity for their notable com- munal leadership. Cohn is a former president of the Urban League of Detroit, as well ning Commission and a member of the board of directors of Legal Aid Bureau. He also served as a member of the board of supervisors of Wayne County and as a member of the advisory board of the United Foundation of De- troit.
