she encouraged the stag-
ing of Yiddish plays —
this the theatrical portion
still a leading feature of
the Book Fairs — and
they always attracted re-
cord audiences.
In Mrs. Friedman's devo-
tion to the language she
lives, there is continuity.
"We are not selling as many
as we did 30 years ago," she
said this week, "but Yiddish
books will be available, they
will be sold, and I am sure
there will be customers. It
will be a sign of the life of
the Yiddish we love."
Mrs. Friedman has a re-
cord' of leadership in Yid-
dish ranks here. She has
been a reader of Yiddish
literary gems, poems and
stories, for many years. Her
activities include joint ef-

SARAH FRIEDMAN

The exhibits, which will
continue in this year's Book
Fair, Nov. 14-22, have en-
couraged book buying and
therefore greater interest in
the literature produced by
Jewish publishing houses.
An anniversary note
with a special mark of
continuity will be in evi-
dence at the Yiddish
desk.
Hebrew and Yiddish
books share with the En-
glish products the emphasis
on the value of Jewish liter-
ature at the Book Fairs. The
Yiddish section has the in-
spired direction of a distin-
=
guished adherent to the
language and its values. It
is again supervised by
Sarah Friedman, who
started it, continues it and
has not been away from it in
the entire 30 years.
This is her labor of love,
her desire to see Yiddish re-
tain
its glorious role as a

literary traditions. There-
fore, she remained at her
post, continues at it, attunes
her life to it.
