Some years ago, a
Russian-born Israeli con-
ductor led the Radio Or-
chestra of "Kol Israel" in
Jerusalem in an extraordi-
nary performance of
Mozart's C Minor Mass. I
remember him vividly as a
highly gifted musician and I
was quite pleased to speak
on the same program about
"Mozart and the Freema-
sons."
Years laterl attended the
world premiere of "The
Temptation," an opera by
Israeli composer Josef Tal.
It took place at the National
Opera House in Munich,
one of Europe's outstanding
musical institutions. It was
a gala presentation, spon-
sored by the Bavarian gov-
ernment. The music and the
story were very complex,
avant garde, almost aggres-
sive. First class singers and
actors participated and the
orchestra also was excel-
lent.
• The best however was the
conductor, who was
acclaimed by the audience
and the international press.
It was the same gentleman
who had conducted the
Mozart Mass in Jerusalem.
In Vienna I saw him
again, when he directed the
Vienna Symphony Or-
chestra. On all three occa-
sions he was
enthusiastically applauded
by the listeners. .
A few days ago I heard the

Meriwether's,
GARY BERTINI
chestra in a most exciting
performance of Gustav
Mahler's Second Symphony
("The Resurrection") at
Ford Auditorium. And
there on the stage was
Maestro Gary Bertini, the
conductor whom I had ad-
mired in Jerusalem,
Munich and Vienna.
Mahler's Second Sym-
phony is a very difficult and
gigantic work! Maestro Ber-
tini gave his utmost and so
did every member of the De-
troit Symphony Orchestra.
The result was a trium-
phant one. The soloists, also
inspired by the Maestro,
sang superbly; The Univer-
sity of Michigan choirs were
at their best.
It was truly an unforgett-
able event. Bertini and all
the participants received a
standing and long-lasting
ovation.
