OF STATE POLICE HOLLYWOOD — Ingrid Bergman, the three-time Academy-Award-winning Swedish screen star, sur- prised everyone on the set in Israel when she appeared as aging Prime Minister Golda Meir, before the cameras. Her makeup, gestures and speech pattern made staff, crew and onlookers be- lieve that she actually was "A Woman Called Golda," the character she portrays in the four-hour television movie for Paramount. Judy Davis, the Austra- lian actress known in this country from "My Brilliant Career," portrays Golda Meir from her late teens through the age of 40; scenes with her are already completed at Kibutz Merhavia where Golda worked in the 1920s after The Detroit Chapter of The American Technion Society her arrival from the United States. Also involved in the ear- lier scenes of the film is Leonard Nimoy who essays the role of the hapless Mor- ris Meyerson, Golda's hus- band. Though Nimoy is best known from the television series and subsequent fea- ture film, "Star Trek," he also appeared, as a very young man, on the stage of the long-defunct Hollywood Civic Playhouse with Maurice Schwartz in the English-language adapta- tion of Sholom Aleichem's "Hard to Be a Jew." Nimoy, a Jew, portrayed a Russian gentile posing as a Jew to find out what it meant to be on the side of the oppressed. The role of Anwar Sadat in the contemporary seg- ment of the film went to noted performer Jose Ferrer who happens to be a native of Puerto Rico. However, all did not go smoothly for the film crew in Tel Aviv last week. Police gave the movie company permission to shoot in the streets on Sukkot because heavy traffic makes filming impossible on non-holidays. Religious citizens staged a protest and forced a halt in the filming last Tuesday.
