JERUSALEM — Vitaly
Rubin, a former leader of
the Jewish refusnik move-
ment in Russia, died Oct. 18
from injuries sustained in
an automobile accident
near Beersheva.
A professor of Chinese
history at. Hebrew Univer-
sity, Mr. Rubin was one of
the nine founding members
of what came to be called the
Helsinki Watch Committee,
a group of Moscow dissi-
dents who organized to
monitor Soviet compliance
with the 1975 accords on
East-West cooperation
signed in Helsinki.
Three weeks after he
formed the Helsinki com-
mittee, he received an exit
visa. Other members of the
committee, Yuri Orlov and
Anatoly Shcharansky were
arrested.
