THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
LONDON — Israeli offi-
cials have declined com-
ment on a report in the Sun-
day Times that Israel's June
raid on the Osirak nuclear
reactor facility outside
Baghdad may have been a
cover for explosives set in-
side the plant by Israeli
agents.

Israeli Foreign Minister
Yitzhak Shamir said Wed-

"American pressure" on Is-
rael.
At the same time though,
Shamir added in a radio in-
terview, these remarks
were "not a contribution to
the peace process." They
represented demands which
"Israel has never agreed to
and will never accept: the
Foreign Minister declared.
Speaking in careful and
measured tones, Shamir
-conceded that the aftermath
of Sadat'p assassination was
"a twilight period," a time of
heightened -fears and an-
xieties. "Naturally one
fears changes and upheav-
als," Shamir noted. But the
new Egyptian government
under Mubarak had told Is-
rael in the most un-
equivocal terms that there
would be no change in the
ongoing peace process bet-
ween the two countries.
"However, time will
tell," Shamir added
philosophically. Possibly
these statements, made
so soon after the trauma
of Sadat's death, were not
entirely convincing —
and therefore it would be
well for Israel to watch
developments carefully
and "wait and see,"
Shamir said.
"One must think . . . and
one must listen carefully,"
Shamir added. But if the
Egyptian position is that
the peace process continues
unchanged,— then that
would be Israel's position
too — including the final
withdrawal from Sinai
scheduled for next April, he
said.

Arms Deal Faces
Bonn Opposition
BONN (JTA) — Dov
Ben-Meir, a Labor member
of the Knesset and chair-
man of Histadrut in Tel
Aviv, has received assur-
ances from friends of Israel
in West Germany that they
will do their utmost to pre-
vent the sale of advanced
weaponry by the Bonn gov-
ernment to Saudi Arabia.
A score of trade union of-
ficials, members of the
Bundestag and leaders of
the governing Social Demo-
cratic Party (SPD) re-
sponded to a letter on the
subject addressed to them
by Ben-Meir.
Several expressed dismay
that such Arms deliveries
were even under considera-
tion by the government. But
they could not say what the
outcome will be in the cur-
rent internal debate here
over whether the Federal
Republic should end its
, self-imposed ban on
weapons sales to countries
that are at war or are lo-
cated in areas of tension. If
the ban is lifted, the way
would be open for the sale of
sophisticated weapons sys-
tems, .including the new
Leopard II tanks to the
Saudis.

at Camp David," and
Sadat's killing had added to
those risks. It was incum-
bent upon peace-seeking
forces in the world therefore
to "refrain from adding still
more to the risks that Israel
must undertake . . There
is no need for Israel to pay
(in the currency of 'ges-
tures') for the terrible event
that has happened in
Egypt," Shamir said.
He confirmed that the
possibility of an early
pullback had been raised —
but noted that even the
Egyptians said they did not
regard it seriously as the
scheduled withdrawal was
only a few months away.
Asked about U.S. Sec-
retary of State Alexander
Haig's public demand for
a settlement freeze,
Shamir said Israel "is not
considering doing any-
thing we are not obliged
to do (under Camp
David)."
Shamir seemed especially
cagey on a question about
_the Sudan-Libya tension
and possible Israeli in-
volvement alongside Egypt
at the side of Sudan. This
question involved "strategic
and political problems" and
he would "rather not ad-
dress myself to it here,"
Shamir said.,
