Reader Answers Bienstock
Editor, The Jewish Jews:
Victor M. Bienstock's col-
umn "Israel, American
Jewry — Separate Entities"
(Jewish News, Oct. 9) is an
exercise in self-effacement.
Stung by President
Reagan's 'intemperate and
ill-conceived remark that
"it is not the business of
other nations to make
American foreign policy,"
which implicitly criticized
Israel's alleged involve-
ment in the AWACS ton-
troversy, Bienstock seeks to
dispel the notion that
American Jews' "first loy-
alty" is to the state of Israel,
"not the country of his birth
or acquired citizenship."
The columnist seems to be
haunted -by the spectre of
"double loyalty."
In affirming the undi-
luted "Americanism" of the
American Jewish commun-
ity, the author lashes out
against the anti-Semites for
perpetuating this myth and
indicts the Israelis, who, out
of their "continuing ignor-
ance of America and of the
American Jew," are
"guilty" of misreading the
degree of American Jewish
attachment to Israel.
"They should have
known;" Bienstock
seems to be saying, "that
the American Jewish
community is not an Is-
raeli colony." We believe
Mr. Bienstock "cloth pro-
test too much."
What is not disconcerting
about Mr. Bienstock's "dis-
sertation" is that it at-
tempts to resuscitate the
discredited premises and
conclusions of Jewish
apologists and "super-
patriots," who, instead of
reacting with dignity and
pride to those who — for
political expediency or op-
portunism — question the
loyalties of the American
Jewish community, choose
to ingratiate themselves by
lowering the visibility of the
American Jewish commun-
ity as an identifiable ethnic
entity.
Thus, Mr. Bienstock
postulates that "probably
no more than 10 percent of
American Jews belong to
Jewish organizations"; that
"the Zionist belief .
never penetrated deeply
into the American Jewish
masses, nor even into the
leadership," hence "our in-
terest (in Zionism) has been
religious-inspired and
philanthropically moti-
'voted."
He chooses to ignore
such illustrious Ameri-
can Jewish leaders as
Brandeis, Stephen S.
Wise, Abba Hillel Silver
and others, who on cru-
cial occasions articulated
the sentiments of the
overwhelming majority
of American Jews; and he
glosses over the fact that
approximately one mill-
ion American Jews plus
their families are pre-
- sently affiliated with or-
ganized Zionism in the
United States.
Mr. Bienstock's "anemic"
perception of Diaspora-
Israel relations does not
conform to the genuine feel-
ing of partnership and in-
terdependence which per-
meates American Jewish
relations with the state of
Israel.

Anti-Semitic Incidents
Reported at Swiss Gym
GENEVA (JTA) — A 16-
year-old Jewish youth was
severely injured when he
and two other members of
the Bnei Akiva in Basel
were accosted by a group of
Swiss youths in the locker
room of the local sports
center.-
Police are investigating
the incident and the anti-
Semitic inscriptions that
appeared on the locker room
walls several days earlier.
The three Jewish
youngsters, all wearing
yarmulkes, were dressing
after a handball game when
several local Swiss youths
demanded to know, "What
are you Jews doing here?
How come you were not
burned in the gas cham-
bers?"
The contented man
never poor.
