Pay Tribute to Brodhead

tional Union of Councils for Soviet Jews. Pictured

August Aliya Up 16.5 Percent

NEW YORK — Jewish
emigration (aliya) to Israel
from North America in-
creased 16.5 percent in Au-
gust, thus continuing an
upward trend which began
earlier this year, according

to Israel Aliya Center.

Some 379 American Jews
emigrated to Israel in Au-
gust of 1981, as compared'
with 325 during the same
period last year.

Banker Craighead to Receive
Bnai Brith President's Medal

The Bnai Brith Founda-
tion of the United States
will honor, Rodkey
Craighead, former chair-
man and chief executive of- -
ricer of the Detroitbank
Corp., and its principal sub-
sidiary the Detroit Bank
and Trust, with its Presi-
dent's Gold Medallion for
Humanitarianism.
Presentation of the award
will be made at a banquet
Nov. 17 in the Renaissance
Ballroom of the Detroit
Plaza Hotel.
Proceeds of the banquet
will be used to help support
Bnai Brith's youth services
— Hillel foundations on 400
college campuses and the
Bnai Brith Youth Organi-
zation serving over 35,000
teenagers.
In Michigan, there are
active Hillel foundations
at Wayne State Univer-
sity, the University of
Michigan and Michigan.
State University. There
are 1,200 teenagers in the
metropolitan Detroit
area that are members of
the Bnai Brith Youth Or-
ganization.
Craighead began his
banking career in 1936 as a
messenger at the Mellon
National Bank in
Pittsburgh. After army ser-
vice in World War H, he was
employed as a credit analyst

at The Detroit Bank-
predecessor of Detroit Bank
and Trust. He became pres-
ident in 1974 and chairman
in 1977. He held that posi-
tion until his retirement in
August.
Craighead is Chairman of
New Detroit, Inc., a director
of Winkelman Stores, Inc.,
Detroit Renaissance, the
Detroit Economic Growth
Corp. and is a vice chairman
of the Greater Detroit
Chamber of Commerce and
the Economic Club of De-
troit. He is also a director of
the Detroit Symphony Or-
chestra, the United Found-
ation and serves on the
Michigan executive com-
mittee of the United Negro
College Fund.
Jack J. Spitzer, president
of the Bnai Brith Interna-
tional, will present
Craighead with this award
"for his distinguished and
enduring contributions of a
humanitarian nature to the
city, the state and the na-
tion."
The local Bnai Brith
Foundation chairman for
this event is David L. Bitt-
ker. Associate chairman is
Ernest Shaw, and Louis
Weber is the honorary
chairman.

Simons to Receive Award
at U-D Reunion Dinner

Leonard N. Simons will
receive the University of
Detroit's 1981 Honorary
Alumnus Award during its
annual alumni reunion
dinner-dance Oct. 24 at The
Roostertai I .
Simons, who co-founded
the advertising agency now
known as Simons - Michael-
son - Zieve, Inc., has been a
long-time supporter of the
university and its library.
He spearheaded the fund-
raising efforts enabling a
Jewish Studies Chair to be
established at U-D.
Simons recently celeb-
rated his 60th anniversary
in advertising, work he
combines with numerous
civic and philanthropic ac-
tivities. He is a board
member and founder of
Sinai Hospital of Detroit, an
honorary chairman of the
Greater Detroit Round
Table of the National Con-
ference of Christians and
