Sister Carol Will Plant Tree in Israel
to Honor Local Couple Who Saved Jews

By HEIDI PRESS

Sister Carol Rittner, di-
rector of learning resources
at Mercy College of Detroit,
who has been an active
proponent of Holocaust edu-
cation, will be in Israel next
week to plant a tree at Yad
Vashem in honor of a couple
who saved a Jew from the
Nazis during World War II.
The tree will be planted in
honor of Helene and Ignacy
Chorazyczewski.
Sister Carol explained
that the actions of the
Chorazyczewskis were
known to and documented
by Yad Vashem, the inter-
national Holocaust memo-
rial. The couple were told

Since Sister Carol will
be in Israel, the couple
have appointed her their
designee and she will
plant the tree in the Gar-
den of the Righteous at
Yad Vashem.

Sister Carol said that the
tree-planting ceremony will
be filmed by WDIV-TV
(Channel 4) as part of its
10-part series on "Peace in
the Middle East." She said
the series will include five
segments in Israel and five
in Egypt.
Sister Carol, who last
spring conducted a
Holocaust lecture series at
Mercy College, will have a
dual purpose in Israel.
During her one week
stay, she will presnet docu-
ments to Yad Vashem on
behalf of Myndett and
Janny Blom of Royal Oak,
who saved a Jewish dentist
and his wife from the Nazis
in Amsterdam during
World War II.

The documentd• will
presented in an effort to
have the Bloms named as
Righteous Gentiles by
Yad Vashem.

In an interview with The
Jewish News, Mrs. Blom re-
called how she and her hus-
band hid a Jewish dentist,
for whom she worked, and
his wife in their Amsterdam
home, from July 12, 1942 to
May 5, 1945.
Mrs. Blom said she
worked for the dentist, Dr.
Vreedenburg, before she
was married and when she
no longer worked for him
after her marriage they
kept up the friendship.
She recalled that she and
her husband visited the
Vreedenburgs often at the
start of the war, but when
notices came for the Vre-

edenburgs to be sent to
labor camps, they feared the
worst and the Bloms took
them into their home.

A fireman, Mr. Blom
studied to be an ar-
chitect. His drafting table
and study were set up in a
back bedroom, which be-
came the sanctuary for
the Vreedenburgs. For
three years the Vreeden-
burgs were forced to
sleep on a twin bed.

"We wanted to buy
another one for them, but
they told us not to because
the neighbors would ask
'why another bed'?" Mrs.
Blom said. That turned out
to be a lucky move, for when
the Bloms' house was
searched by the Nazis in
January 1945 and she was
asked who occupied the
room, Mrs. Blom remarked
that her mother often came
30 visit, and showed the
Nazi the closet where some
of her mother's clothes
hung.
Little did the Nazi know,
that two Jews were hidden
above the closet, which had
a false ceiling created by
Mr. Blom. The closet was
made to look like it was in
constant use, with a shelf of
Mr. Blom's books and
clothes and blankets stored
within.
The Bloms' son was for-
bidden from entering his
