Judge Cohn to Lead Federation

Federal Judge Avern L.
Cohn was elected president
of the Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration of Detroit at the
Board of Governors meeting
Tuesday in the Fred M. But-
zel Memorial Building.
Other newly erected offic-
ers, who also will serve as
members of the Federation
Executive Committee, are
Ruth K. Broder, Dr.Conrad
L. Giles, Thomas I. Klein,
Dulcie Rosenfeld and Joel
D. Tauber, vice presidents;
Stanley D. Frankel, trea-
surer; and Sol Drachler,
secretary.
Elected to a one-year
term as members-at-
large on the Executive
Committee are: Louis
Berry, David Handle-
man, Jack A. Robinson;
Robert A. Steinberg,
Mandell L. Berman,
Irwin Green, Jane Sher-
man and Stanley J. Win-
kelman.
Max. M. Fisher was
elected honorary chairman
of the Executive Committee
and Hyman Safran and
Paul Zuckerman as honor-
ary members.
The slate of candidates
was presented at the Board
of Governors meeting by
Martin E. Citrin, chairman
of the nominating commit-
tee. Others on the commit-
tee were Marvin I. Dante,
Alfred L. Deutsch, Joel D.
Gershenson and Jessie
Stern.
Also on the Executive
Committee are the follow-
ing persons who serve by
virtue of their office or
chairmanship: Richard
Sloan, president of Detroit
Service Group; Shelby
Tauber, president of Wo-
men's Division; Joseph H.
Jackier, president of United
Jewish Charities; George
M. Zeltzer, immediate past
president of Federation; and
Martin E. Citrin, former
Executive Committee
chairman.
A final category of au-
tomatic Executive Com-
mittee membership con-
sists of five individuals
who chair Federation's
budget and planning
process, all of whom are
appointed by the presi-
dent. Named to these pos-
itions by Judge Cohn for
1981-1982 terms were:
David K. Page, Capital
Needs; Robert H. Naftaly,
National and Community
Relations Agencies; Mark
E. Schlussel, Culture and
Education; and James A.
August, Community Ser-
vices, as well as Bruce E.
Thal, chairman of the coor-
dinating Conference of Di-
vision Chairmen.
Formerly a vice president
of Federation, Judge Cohn
has been a vice chairman of
the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign - Israel Emergency
Fund and a leader of the At-
torneys Section of the Pro-
fessional Service Division.
Judge Cohn also has been
chairman of Federation's
National Agencies budget
and planning division. He is
a past national vice presi-
dent of the American
Jewish Committee.
Locally, Judge Cohn has

Community Council. He
also served on the board of
the United Jewish
charities.
A native of Detroit, he
saw active service in the
U.S. Army between 1943
and 1946. Judge Cohn is a
graduate of the Univer-

sity of Michigan Law
School and was admitted
to the Michigan Bar in
.1949.
Judge Cohn began his
career working in the law
firm of his father, Irwin I.
Cohn, and later became a
principal in Honigman, Mil-
ler, Schwartz and Cohn.
He was appointed United
States District Judge for the
Eastern District of Michi-
gan by President Jimmy
Carter on the recommenda-
tion of Sen. Donald Riegle in
1979.
Judge Cohn has been a
member of the Michigan So-
cial Services Commission
and chairman of both the
Michigan Civil Rights
Commission and the Detroit
Board of Police Commis-
sioners.
He is a past director of the
Detroit Bar Association and
trustee of its foundation. He
was appointed chairman of
a special committee on court
congestion by the president
of the State Bar of Michigan
in 1977.

AJC-IEF Women Will Hear

National UJA Leader

Sylvia Hassenfeld, na-
tional vice chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal and
past National Women's Di-
visoin chairman of the UJA,
will address the Advance
Gifts Section of the Jewish
Welfare Federation Wo-
men's Division on Oct. 22 at
the Franklin home of Babs
Lowenstein. The luncheon
meeting, beginning at 11
a.m., is open to contributors
of at least $6,000 to the 1981
Allied Jewish Campaign -
Israel Emergency Fund.
Mrs. Hassenfeld has been
a leader of women's mis-
sions to Poland, Romania
and Israel, and was the divi-
sion's first representative to
visit South America in
1977.
She was the first woman
to achieve membership on
the Jewish Agency's board
of governors, and she is a
member of the board of di-
rectors and executive com-
mittee of the United Jewish
Appeal. Mrs. Hassenfeld be-
longs to the America Israel
Public Affairs Committee
and also serves ori_the ad-
visory board of the Center
for Strategic and Interna-
