Chaim Potok's "The Cho- sen, - screened within the frame of "Celebration 33" but only now released, in. spite of subtle performacnes by Rod Steiger and Maximi- lian Schell, may give the world a wrong impression of American Jewry in the lat- ter days of the Holocaust when survival of our brethen abroad should have been more important than ultra-Orthodox dogma. Steve Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" lampoons German officers digging in Egypt in the late 1930s to excavate the "Ark of the Covenant." Mel Brooks, "History of the World — Part I" has caused a storm of protest though the irreveregt film maker insists he is exposing but not endorsing man's bigotry and intolerance. On television we saw the rather naive interpretation of Hitler's last days in the David Susskind production for CBS, "The Bunker," an- other whitewash of the Nazis which couldn't even be redeemed by Anthony Hopkins' impressive per- formance. More effectively hand- led was "Kitty Returns to Auschwitz," a narrative film - against the background of the dread- ful extermination camp where the heroine recalls the grim past. "Masada," a magnificent 8-hour television epic was directed by the late Boris Segal for ABC, Universal and Israeli industrialist Arnon Milchan. This brings us to the phe- nomenon of Neil Simon, today by far the most effec- tive writer for stage and sc- reen in America. Only When I Laugh," is Simon's most serious film to date. There are no one- liners in the compassionate comedy-drama that deals with a Broadway actress who has become an alco- holic and is unable to care for teen-aged daughter and to face life in general. "Producing is a logical ex- tension of writing," he ex- plained. "It's simply a mat- ter of protecting my own material." Thus, Simon concerned himself only with the creative side of "Only When I Laugh" while Roger M. Rothstein was in charge of the physical production. M. Rothstein was in charge of the physical production. The characters in the drama are portrayed by his wife, Marsha Mason, with Kristy McNichol as her daughter, James Coco and Joan Hac- kett as her friends, and David Dukes as her one- time lover. Enough research will tend to support your theory. Teams Use Ineligible Players In Quest for Championship By HASKELL COHEN (Copyright 1981, JTA. Inc.) In the quest for supre- macy and in the race for the championship of the Israel National Basketball League. Some of the clubs are taking action consi- dered illegal by the Federa- tion for International Bas- ketball Associations (FIBA) which controls amateur basketball in 144 countries throughout the world. Each country in the FIBA orbit is permitted to have one non-citizen of the coun- try involved as a member of its basketball squad. In the case of Israel, this means that Israeli teams can ac- quire the services of a non- Jew who is a non-citizen and permit him to play on its team. For some time now there has been a considerable amount of "cheating" so far as hiding the religious backgrounds of players is concerned. The time has come when this practice must be curbed or ' re- strained, otherwise Israeli basketball is going to come under heavy censure from FIBA headquarters. Right now there are basketball players in Is- rael who are masquerad- ing as Jews and defi- nitely are not Jewish. In one case, a young Ameri- can player who doesn't know about the regula- tions is being palmed off as a Jewish performer. It France Seeks Soviet Dissidents in Prisoner Swap so happens that he has a typically sounding Jewish name. He was brought over by an Is- raeli who resides in the United States and serves as a scout for a top flight Israeli team. It seems that this player will not be permitted to per- form for his club in the Is- rael National League but will be permitted to partici- pate in international con- tests against clubs from Spain, Italy, and Switzer- land. This case is only one of several which exists in Is- rael. If this were an isolated situation perhaps one might be inclined to overlook the situation but the time has come when this should be brought out into the open and if the Israel Basketball Federation doesn't take steps then we may, ulti- mately, see so many falsifi- cations of names and falsifi- cation of records that in a matter of a decade half of the Israel National League could conceivably be of non-Jewish origin. The situation pertaining to the influx of non-Jewish players has become so acute that the sports committee of the Knesset is sending a member to the United States in order to investi- gate the whole problem. There is a strong likelihood that the Knesset's represen- tative may hire a private detective to check, in ad- vance, on every American from here on in who goes to Israel as a professed Jew, in order to play basketball. PARIS — A prisoner ex- change involving Soviet Andrei dissidents Sakharov, Anatoly Shcharansky and Yuri Orlov has been proposed by the French government, ac- cording to a report in Le Monde last weekend. The newspaper reported that France was prepared to swap Gunter Guillaume, a former East German Air Force general arrested on espionage charges last year for the three dissidents. French diplomatic sources indicate that the offer had been made and was pre- sumably under considera- tion by East German and Soviet authorities.
