Greek Apartment Building
Is Uncovered at Tel Dor

JERUSALEM — A Hel-
lenistic building several
dozen yards long, par-
titioned into dwelling units
like a modern apartment
house, was exposed in the
recently concluded season of
archeological excavations
at Tel Dor on Israel's north-
ern coast.
The dig was carried out
under the auspices of the
Hebrew University Insti-
tute of Archeology and the
Israel Exploration Society
in cooperation with New
York University, Boston
University, and the
California State University
at Sacramento.
The team, headed by Prof.
Ephraim Stern of the He-
brew University, included
150 students from the three
American schools, and
enjoyed the assistance of
Kibutz Nahsholim and the
agricultural school at Par-
dess Hanna.
In this second season of
excavations the team ex-
posed a large residential
area from the Hellenistic
period. It is built to a pre-
cise plan of the Hip-
podamian system, a grid
system which was com-
mon in Greco-Roman
town planning.
Along the wall and paral-
lel to it a row of stores and
workshops was revealed
facing the street, while on
the opposite side of the
street the "apartment
house" structure was ex-
posed.
A great deal of pottery,
incuding ornamented clay
lamps and wares imported
from Greece, was found in-
side the building along with
glazed pottery (faience)
necklaces, clay figurines,

coins, loom and spindle
weights and a sandstone in-
cense altar.
The archeologists also
continued the previous sea-
son's work of exposing the
city walls and gates from
the Hellenistic and Persian
periods. Beside the gates
they found "arsenals" con-
taining slingstones,
catapult stones and boul-
ders, some with their
weight marked on them.
In another area during
the six-week dig some
Roman buildings were
uncovered, one with a
storeroom containing
numerous storage .ves-
sels.
Stone tables and a few
beautifully preserved
bronze objects decorated
with satyrs were found in
another building. At the Is-
raelite level, Phoenician
pottery and an Egyptian
scarab were found.
