Seek Correction of Brinkley
Remarks on Sephardim

NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Congress
has called on the National
Broadcasting Company for
a "correction" of remarks by
newsman David Brinkley in
a recent "NBC Magazine"
television program.
Phil Baum, associate
executive director of the
AJCongress, wrote to NBC
following a number of corn-
pla,ints received by the
organization concerning the
Sept. 11 "NBC Magazine"
broadcast. In that program
which dealt with the so-
called "Israeli Mafia,"
Brinkley said:
"Sephardics were kicked
out of Spain centuries ago,
and have lived in the Middle
East prior to the establish-
ment of Israel; and they
have now moved into it,"
In his letter to NBC,
Baum declared:
"We do not believe that
Mr. Brinkley was ill-
intentioned, but his com-
ments were surely ambigu-
ous and, at the very least,
poorly formulated. In the
context of the broadcast,
they almost inevitably im-
plied that there was some
continuity in conduct be-
tween the Sephardim who
were 'kicked out of Spain'
and those who are in the 'Is-
raeli Mafia!
"Obviously, this wouldbe
a grotesque reading of his-
tory; the expulsion of the
Jewish community from
Spain remains an instance
of great and tragic injustice.
An innocent people was
ejected from its home sim-
ply because of primitive,
brutal religious in-
tolerance.

OKLAHOMA CITY
(JTA) — The Oklahoma
City Jewish Federation
Housing Foundation has
submitted a bid to the fed-
eral Housing and Urban
Development department,
asking for funds to finance
construction of a 65-
apartment project for the
elderly.

Brinkley would agree with
this assessment. Therefore,
in the interest of accuracy
and clarity, and for the
benefit of both the audience
and Mr. Brinkley's contin-
ued standing as a reliable
commentator on world af-
fairs, we urge that you
undertake to insure that an
amplification or correction
of his comment is included
in an early issue of NBC
Magazine. We look forward
to this early clarification."

Chinese Minister
Claims Israel
Blocks Peace

UNITED NATIONS
(JTA) — The People's Re-
public of China denounced
Israel in the General As-
sembly last week declaring
that its "lawlessness was in-
tolerable" and blamed it for
the worsening situation in
the Middle East during the
past year.
The accusation was made
in a speech by Zhang Wen-
jin, China's Vice Minsster
for Foreign Affairs. He
charged that Israel contin-
ued to obstruct "a reason-
able settlement" of the
Mideast conflict." He said
Israel committed further
aggression against Arab
countries, referring to its
attack on Iraq's nuclear
reactor last June and its in-
vasions and attacks on
Lebanon.
Zhang praised the Arab
states and the European
Economic Community
(EEC) for their "positive ef-
forts" to bring a settlement
to the Middle East. "Our
attitude is that we welcome
all initiatives that are con-
ducive to a comprehensive
and just settlement of the
Middle East question and to
peace and stability in the
region."
China, in previous years,
had expressed support for
the Camp David process but
did not mention . Camp
David this year.
