We stand on the threshold of a new year; according to tradition, 5,742 years after the creation of man; 3,800 years since our father Ab- raham discovered that one God, creator and source, reigned over all; 3,200 years since the exodus from Egypt; 3,000 years since King David made Jerusalem his capital; and almost 2,000 years since the Romans burnt our Temple, put an end to our indepen- dence and scattered us throughout the world. A people like ours that looks back on a history of thousands of years, tends to lose its sense of time and to think of processes as necessarily long and time-consuming. But it is a grave error to undere- stimate the importance of time and not to respond to the urgency of the hour. Had the state of Israel been established not in 1948 but in 1938, only 10 years earlier, we might have re- scued hundreds of thou- sands or even millions of our brothers who were annihilated in the Holocaust. What, we may ask, are 10 years in the an- nals of a people whose his- tory extends over thousands of years? Yet sometimes 10 years loom up as equivalent to 2,000. What conclusion is to be drawn from this? That whatever we must do should be done at once and without delay. Not because we are threatened by a catas- trophe, but because the tasks we must perform are many, and it may well be that what we can achieve today will be most difficult to do tomorrow. - We must make an intense effort to strengthen Jewish, Zionist education in the Diaspora; to learn the lan- guage of our people — the Holy Tongue — and the le- gacy of our forefathers. Thus we will deepen Jewish consciousness and preserve the continuity of our people's existence. We must add strength to the state of Israel in every possible way and above all through aliya. To return to the land of our fathers and build it was the dream we cherished during 2,000 years of wandering. The realization of the dream was always dependent on the good will of others. Today it depends on us and us only. I turn to all Jewish communities everywhere and urge concentration of effort upon these two sacred objectives. Let us not wait nor delay. In particular, I address myself to those young people who are not slaves to material possessions but aspire to self-expression and realization in both per- sonal and national terms. I wish you a year of growth and realization of the hopes we all share. May the prophecies of Isaiah be- come fact in our day: For out of Zion shall go forth the Law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Bring My sons from far, And my daughters from the end of the earth. Nation shall not life up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore. A good and blessed year to all of you! We wish to express our deep gratiturte to the MAW HAPLAYTAN and Rabbi Rosenzveig for the testimonial dinner honoring our beloved husband and father JACK WAKSBERG We also appreciate the participation of the Radomer Society, family and friends. On behalf of our entire family we wish you and all of Israel A Happy and Healthy Year. Ida and Dr. Morry Waksberg INTRODUCING Custom Made Formica Tables Without a custom price.
