According to Begin, there are at present insufficient forces in the region to hallt a Soviet incursion into Iran. Begin said the U.S. had in- itiated the strategic cooper- ation agreement but that he had a similar suggestion in mind before he went to Washington. Begin said he was con- vinced that the peace process with Egypt would continue after Is- rael's final withdrawal from Sinai in April 1982. He said Israel had made its commitment to the peace treaty and would carry out its - part to the letter even though it was painful to abandon the settlements in Sinai. He observed that Israel viewed President Anwar, Sadat's political opponents as enemies of peace and wanted to see the Egyptian leader overcome them. Begin said he does not ter Ariel Sharon's conten- tion that Jordan is the homeland of the Palesti- nians. He said he hoped a "free confederation" could be created between Israel and Jordan with free trade between the two countries. Finally, Begin observed. that the continued presence of Syrian SAM-6 anti- aircraft missiles in Lebanon would not be tolerated by Is-_ rael but he would neverthe- less give the U.S. time to gain their removal through diplomatic means. On domestic matters, Begin took a middle course in the current controversy over the Chief Rabbinate's claim that Halakha took precedence over the secular laws of the state. He said that while nothing should be done to impair the laws of the land, "I have never said we are only a country of law. We are both a country of law and also (,f Halakha," he claimed. Tzitzit Role in Prayer By RABB: SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1981, JTA, Inc.) It is customary to hold the tzitzit of the talit and to kiss them during the recital of the "Shema." The "Shema" is, of course, the basic declaration of the faith of a Jew and his charge to observe the command- ments of the Almighty. Holding the tzitzit during the Shema accomplishes two ends. First, it exemplifies how sacred and dear the commandments are to the worshipper. Since the tzitzit represent all the commandments and obliga- tions of the faith, holding them and kissing them indicates his love and re- spect for them. Seocnd, it is claimed that holding the fringes, putting them near the eyes and kis- sing them during the Shema indicates the wor- shipper's total absorption with the faith. Even from the body's pur- ity the mind receives a secret sympathetic aid. Congress, Bnai Brith President Jack Spitzer and Hadassah President Ber- nice Tannenbaum. LL 1-1-CASH =mom FOR YOUR I.
