Almighty.
in "Yossel's Prayer" (Lot-
hrop, Lee and Shepard),
Barbara Cohen tells the
story of a rich man and his
sons who are well dressed
and respected as the richest
in the community who are
on their way to the
synagogue on Yom Kippur
morning. They are stopped
by the bedraggled Yossel
who pleads to be taken to
the services. They shove
him offend order him to the
barn — the cattle must be
cared for.
Yossel does not touch food
or drink, he does his work
and towards the end of the
day he plays a special tune
on his reed pipe.
Reb Meir and his sons
are aggravated by the
length of the service.
They are anxious to end
the day's praying. When
the last blast of the
Shofar is sounded. Reb
Meir asked the rabbi why
the service was pro-
longed and the reason for
its final ending. The rabbi
said it was a tune on a
reed that moved him.
Upon reaching their
home, Reb Meir saw Yossel
carrying the reed and he be-
came aware of the lad who
had reached the Almighty
although he was unable to
attend synagogue services.
That's when Reb Meir, over
the prOtests of his sons, re-
pented and invited Yossel
into his home to break the
fast, in spite of his unclean
attire.
Thus an old tale is well
retold, and "Yossel's
Prayer" is an inspired tale,
with the added attractions
of the many drawings de-
- pitting the Yom Kippur
services and the motiva-
tions by Michael J. De-
raney. Both author and
illustrator have splendid
records for their previous
works.

Assimilation
Rampant Among
Argentina's Jews

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Only 30 percent of Argenti-
na's 300,000-member
Jewish community is asso-
ciated in any way with
Jewish organizations, ac-
cording to Yitzhak Golden-
berg, and adviser to the
Jewish Agency on Latin
American affairs.
Goldenberg, who immig-
rated to Israel from Argen-
tina seven years ago, at-
tributed that situation to
the high rate of assimilation
among Argentine Jews. He
briefed the World Zionist
Organization Executive
last week.
Goldenberg said the fact
that unemployment in
Argentina has reached 40
percent coupled with var-
ious political limitations,
affected Zionist activities
among Jewish there.
He suggested the promo-
tion of investment schemes
in Israel by Argentine Jews
through the creation of eco-
nomic committees that
would work with the local
zionist federation.
