(Editor's note: This is a segment from Boris Smo- lar's forthcoming book, "In The Service Of My People.") During the many years of my work as an American correspondent in various lands, my life has often been in danger. Danger was my daily por- tion when I was the only American Jewish news- paperman in Nazi Ger- many. I was always having skirmishes with the Ges- tapo. The special protection ac- corded to me by the U.S. Embassy in Berlin — under instructions from the State Department in Washington — encouraged me to pursue my active journalistic work in the German capital under the very eyes of the Nazis. And even then the U.S. Consul-General in Be- rlin, Raymond Geist, warned me as a personal friend, that Gestapo hooli- gans, especially assigned for the task, might beat me up brutally in the street and leave me a cripple for life. The Nazi authorities, of course, would deny any responsibility for the act and promise the Ameri- MR. & MRS. In Romania, where I used to come from time to time following anti-Jewish pog- roms — like the notorious pogrom in the city of Borsha, in 1930, or the pog- rom in Bucharest in 1941 when Jews were dragged from the streets by anti- Semitic "Iron Guard" groups and delivered in trucks to the local slaughterhouse to be slaughtered there like cat- tle with their bodies later hung on iron hooks — I was never sure of my security. During one of these visits, the American ambassador in Bucharest ordered me upon my arrival in the city to take the next train back to Paris, fearing that I was risking my life even by stay- ing one day in the Roma- nian capital. After witnessing a pog- rom in the township of Prztyk and being de- tained there by local authorities despite my American passport,, the Polish Foreign Ministry in Warsaw — unhappy over my eyewitness re- ports of the pogrom which were featured on the front pages of numer- ous American newspap- ers —"advised" me never to visit Poland again since the central authorities "could not guarantee my safety." gou, tfizou,9fiout me. In Poland, where anti- Semitism was an open pol- icy of the government, I was always an unwelcome vis- itor whenever I arrived there for a short visit to study the situation of the Jews there. These situations, how- ever, did not frighten me as much as when I found my- self surrounded by Arabs in the all-Arab town of Ramie during the, Arab riots in .
