A Quiz for Rosh Hashana

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1981. JTA, Inc.)

Why does the Jewish
New Year (Rosh
Hashana) fall on, what
the Bible says is, the
seventh month?
In the Pentateuch it is not
mentioned that Rosh
Hashana is the name of the
holiday that occurs on the
first day of the seventh
month. The term Rosh
Hashana does not appear in
the Bible until the Book of
Ezekiel (40:1). Actually, it
is the Passover holiday that
occurs during the first
month (i.e. the 15th of the
month).
Talmud (Masseket Rosh
Hashana 2a) speaks of four
New Year occasions in the
Jewish year. It has been ex-
plained that, if the idea of
Rosh Hashana is to com-
memorate the beginning of
some phenomenon, then the
first month (i.e., the holiday
season of Passover) and the
seventh month (the holiday
season of Rosh Hashana)
both commemorate a
specific beginning.
It was during the first
month (the month of
Passover) that the Exodus
occured and it was then that
the Jewish nation was in-
augurated. Jews were just a
collection of tribal families
before that.
It was in the seventh
month (the month when
Rosh Hashana occurs) that
man was created and thus it
was the beginning of man-
kind, which is then com-
memorated. The Jew, being
both a member of a specific
people as well as a member
of the human race in gen-
eral, is - thus asked to com-
memorate the beginning of
both of these phenomena in
his calendar of observances.
Why is the Rosh
Hashana season re-
garded as the season of
judgement above all
other seasons?
Actually, the Talmud
tells us that there are four
seasons of judgement dur-
ing the year. A number of
reasons are offered to ex-
plain why our liturgy and
. style of observance stress
the Rosh Hashana season as
the season of judgement
above all other times of the
year.

Some claim that the sea-
son of Rosh Hashana was
chosen because it is during.
this month that Jews ob-
serve many religious prac-
tices which would give them
an advantage at the bar of
judgement, i.e. sukka,
shofar, lulav, Fast of Yom
Kippur, etc.
In this same vein some
also claim that this time of
the year is a great harvest
season when Jews used to
offer their tithes to the Le-
vites and the poor, and used
to begin the observance of
the Shemita (seventh and
Jubilee year, thus creating
a time when many good
deeds were performed
which would tend to turn
the judgement in their
favor.
Also, the zodiac sign at-
tributed to this month is
that of a scale which sym-
bolizes the "scale of judge-
ment." It is furthermore
claimed that since this'is
the month when Adam was
created, it was the time to
pray to the Almighty to
convince him that mankind
is still worthwhile and
should be preserved, espe-
cially since the human race
is the creation of the Al-
mighty.
Why is the shofar kept
under cover when not
being used on Rosh
Hashana?
Generally speaking, the
practical reason is so' that
one would not use the shofar
on Rosh Hashana except for
the purpose of sounding , the
ritual shofar notes
prescribed by Jewish tradi-
tion. If it were left Un-
covered for the entire day
one might forget himself
and use it for some other
purpose.
It is forbidden to blow an,
musical instrument on a
Jewish holiday.
The mystics also 'claim
that keeping the Shofar
covered is to hide the iden-
tity of the day from the
Satan who longs to bring ac-
cusations against the people
on this day of judgement.
Keeping the shofar covered
does not let the Satan dis-
cover the identity of the day.
The mystics also state
that should he try to bring
his accusations to bear
while the shofar is being
