junior golf champion, from
Kfar Saba, who was born in
South Africa, has been com-
peting internationally in a
variety of junior cham-
pionship programs.
His first showing in the
United States was at the
San Diego event for
youngsters and he did very
well. It is expected that he
and Laurie Been, another
South African-born youth,
will represent Israel, ulti-
mately, in the World Cup
competition which is held
annually in a different in-
ternational capital.
One of the prime aides to
the Israel golf program is a
fellow who is getting along
in years, here in the United
States, Sam Sharrow, who
goes back quite a way. He
started out as a caddy in
1918 in New Hampshire. He
became a pro in 1932 and for
53 years he has been a
teacher at several clubs in
the Northeast.
. Catherine LaCoste, who
went on, eventually, to be-
come a French, English and
United States champion, is
one of his most prominent
pupils. Sharrow is well
known in Israel for his ef-
forts to promote the links
game there having been in-
vited to help set up the sol-
itary golf course in
Caesarea.
The course was, origi-
nally, financed by the

Rothschild family'of France
and Sam, who is very
friendly with the pro there,
Charles Mandelstam, has
been back and forth to the
historic spot innumerable
times. He served as man-
ager and coach of the U.S.
golf team in Maccabia
competition several times
and his most prominent
winner was Bruce
Fleischer, who, ultimately
went on to become the 1968
U.S. amateur champion.
Today, Fleischer is
among the top professionals
in the country, being listed
in the 41st position with
earnings this year totalling
more than $65,000. If Bruce
stays in the top 60 among
the money-makers on the
links he does not have to
qualify for any of the tour-
naments to be played in
1982 with the solitary ex-
ception of the Masters.

ISRAEL'S PREMIER

tennis star, Shlomo Glicks-
tein, currently playing the
American circuit, got off to a
good start in one of his ear-
lier appearances in the
States when he took first
place and $15,000 in a tour-
nament held in South
Orange in New Jersey.
Shlomo is picking up a lot
of experience playing the
best court stars from around
the world, and if he can se-
cure a partner in Israel half
as good as he is, you'll be
hearing about Israel's rapid
progress in Davis Cup play
in the not too distant future.
With so many tennis courts
springing up all over the
Holy Land, there is bound to
be a plethora of outstanding
male and female court
luminaries developing in
the not too distant future.

WILLIE SIMS, the
Black Jew who played with
the U.S. Maccabia team,
which won the Interna-
tional Games champion-
ship recently, isn't taking
any chances. He has been
drafted by the Denver
Nuggets in the NBA but
cannot secure a guarantee
from them thay they will
not cut him from their
squad after the fall try-outs.
He has signed with Haifa-
Maccabi at a good figure, by
any standards, and will re-
port to that club in Sep-
tember.
He has been playing in
the California pro league
where the Denver scouts
have watched him closely.
The scouts have advised his
agent that- he stands a good
chance of making the
Nuggets squad but will not
give the guarantee that
Willie requires. Conse-
gently, he is taking the sure
way out and will go to Israel
for his next court perform-
ance.
THE JEWISH BOYS,
particularly in New York
who played for various col-
lege teams in the metropoli-
tan center as well as in the
pro leagues have been
banded together in an
organization known as the
Basketball Fraternity.
So many of these players
of the .past like Moe
Goldman, Ossie Sheet/roan, •

Slugger Schwartz, Milt
Trupin, and coaches like
Jimmy Moskowitz and Mac
Hodesblatt, names to con-
jure with 30 to 40 years ago
in New York, are now band-
ing together in Florida,
where they all reside in
condominiums, to join up in
the southern branch of the
New York Basketball
Fraternity.
