THE DETROIT AMISH NEWS Sculpture A Tribute to Late UHS Official Bernard Isaacs I A sculpture of the late Bernard Isaacs, first superintendent of the United Hebrew Schools, will be dedicated at an aca- demic convocation in mem- ory of Mr. Isaacs 1 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Louis and Esther LaMed Auditorium of the main UHS building. The sculpture was de- signed by Detroit artist Ar- thur Schneider. Guest speaker at the con- vocation will be Dr. Samuel Schlafer, superintendent of the Chicago Hebrew school system. His topic will be "Notes on the History of Jewish Education in the U.S." Born in Lithuania, Mr. Isaacs came to the United _States in 1904 and pursued studies toward a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering. However, his love for He- brew and his interest in teaching brought him to the field of Jewish education. Mr. Isaacs began his career in Jewish education -in Indianapolis, Ind. In 1919, he was called to take BERNARD ISAACS over the professional lead- ership of the newly or- ganized United Hebrew Schools of Detroit. He set up a highly de- veloped school system using the natural method of teaching Hebrew. Under his leadership, the UHS grew and developed and- were joined by several congrega- tional schools. In 1926, the UHS became a consitutuent agency of the Jewish Wel- fare Federation of Detroit. Mr. Isaacs also organized 'a Hebrew Cultural Society in Detroit. He also de- veloped a Hebrew literary organ. He published stories irr Hebrew and became a well-known Hebrew author. He had several volumes of short stories published. The public is invited to the convocation. Genetics Chair JERUSALEM The Scheinfeld Chair for . Human Behavior Genetics and for Special Research is to be established at the He- - brew.University by the Syl- via and Aaron Scheinfeld Foundation of Woodstock, Ill. DIAMOND BAKERY BBYO Activities . The annual BBYO Kic- koff Dance will take place 8:30 43.m. Oct. 3 at Southfield - Lathrup High School. The dance is free to all nationally-registered members of AZA and BBG. Non-registered and pro- spective members will be admitted at a nominal fee. Music will be provided by Chris O'Brien of WDRQ- FM. The entire Jewish youth community is invited. The deadline for registering members is Oct. 1. The next meeting of the Great Lakes BBG Council will take place 7 p.m. Oct. 1 in the Dubin Meeting Room of the Bnai Brith Building. The council will decide on its -annual fund raiser as well as approve the criteria for this year's Outstanding and Most Improved Chapter Awards. Each chapter is ex- pected to be represented by at least three delegates. The BBYO Leadership Training Institute will take place Oct. 23-25 at Camp Tamarack. Eve Jacobs will lead Israeli singing during the weekend. Applications are available from any AZA, or BBG chapter president or from the BBYO office.
