leaders including two dozen:
Jewish representatives,,
went to establish a Blues:.
tone Histadrut scholarship':
fund in Israel.
Morris Lieberman, in be-
half of the Histadrut Trade.
Union Council, presented
Bluestone with the
Jerusalem Plaque, in.
appreciation of his many
years' services to Israel's
labor movement and in sup-
port of defensive efforts for
Israel.
Former Vice President
Walter Mondale, as guest
speaker, recalled Blues-
tone's immense services
to the labor movement in
the U.S.
He added encomia for
Bluestone's notable contri-
butions to Israel and His-
tadrut and took occasion to
emphasize that in Israel
there is a free press and a
powerful democratic set of
principles which lends not-
able status to the Kneseet as
a parliamentary force in a
free society.
The event was signifie- -
antly enhanced by. the
presentation to Douglas
Fraser, president of the
United Automobile Work-
ers, of a citation for his
memorable contributions to .
Israel and to the American
labor movement. The pre-
sentation was made by Dr.
Herbert Levine, executive
director of the American
Trade Union Council for
Histadrut.
Bluestone, responding to
the tributes, expressing
gratitude in his own and his
wife Zelda's behalf, gave an
historical analysis of the
Zionist ideal, of Israel's role
in the world as a true, the
only, democracy in the Mid-
-'dle East. He spoke with
deep feeling about his devo-
tion to the needs treated in
the program of the labor
movement, and in its
entirety in the importance
of lending stength to Israel
in the struggle for a free
existence.
Bluestone took occa-
sion to expose the PLO's
aims to destroy Israel. He
quoted from the PLO
covenant to prove his
point and warned of the
spreading hatred, urging
unanimous American ac-
tion to deny the ter-
rorists.
James Watts represented
Mayor Coleman Young in
the tributes to Bluestone.
Resolutions of commen-
dations, adopted by the
Michigan House of Repre-
sentatives and the State
Senate, were read by Rep.
Bobby Crim and Sen. Ed
Pierce. Both delivered ac-
companying speeches prais-
ing Bluestone's many serv-
ices.
As toastmaster, William
Marshall added his praise
for Bluestone's role in labor
ranks and Histadrut.
Mary Freedland opened
the dinner program with
the national anthem. The
invocation and benediction
were given by Msgr. Cle-
ment Kern and Rabbi
Richard C. Hertz.
