NEW YORK — Jay
Sommer, a Holocaust sur-
vivor who began his teach-
ing career in a displaced_
persons camp, assumed his
official role as America's
Teacher of the Year earlier
this month.
Sommer, who teaches
language at New Rochelle
High School in New York,
was one of 140,000 teachers
nominated by their col-
leagues throughout the
country. The annual contest
ikridponsored jointly by the
Council of Chief State
School Officers,
Encyclopedia Britannica
and Good Housekeeping
Magazine.
''-In 1940, when he was 12,
the Nazis sent Sommer, a
native Of-Czechoslovakia, to
the first-of a series of labor
camps. Eventually he was
sent to a camp in Hungary.
Being able to speak Hunga-
rian, enabled him to escape
and blend into the sur-
