iThe Best of Everything

FROM TIME TO TIME
we find that having others
offer their opinions and ob-
servations gives another
dimension of readership re-
viewing.
As seen through the eyes
of Marilyn Frumkin
"In a twist on the Pied
Piper story, guess who has
little children following his
grey hairy big feet
everywhere they go? A six-
foot tall pink-tailed New
Jersey rat named Chuck E.
Cheese who wanders
among the tables in a res-
taurant of the same name!
"Chuck has a traveling
partner, a banjo-toting
hound dog called Jasper T.
Jowls. The two mas-
queraders have delighted
the hundreds of kids who,
each day since the grand
opening, have been lucky
enough to escort an adult or
two into this unique pizza
eatery on Orchard Lake Rd.
near Telegraph in Sylvan
Lake.
"And then there's Dolly
Dimples. She's a
sequined, chest-heaving,
computer-controlled
lady hippo who sings
your favorites at the
piano bar.'Plus a large
and crazy cast of other
three-dimensional,
computer-animated
characters putting on
shows in the main dining
area.
"There's more: kiddie
rides, a cartoon show and
circus mirror; dozens of
video games and a 'Swiss
Cheese' maze to crawl
through; colorful flags that
wave themselves!
"Interested? Grab some
kids and go. That's what I've
done — twice in one week!
The second visit was prom-
ised so we could get our
granddaughters to leave
without crying after the

first visit. As 4-year-old
Rachel said, 'It's the bestest
restaurant I ever saw in my
whole life!'
"Remember the days of
old-time neighborhood pic-
nics? Chuck E. Cheese's is
rather like that. Although
there are a goodly number
of booths, most customers
prefer to sit at one of the
many long tables. There,
strangers become acquain-
tances, children enjoy new
playmates. It's impossible
to be aloof.
"Oh yes — the food.
Well, it's Little Caesar's
Pizza and sandwiches
and a salad bar, pop and
milk and beer and wine,
soft vanilla ice cream
with help-yourself-to-
all-you-want toppings.
It's all-American fare,
nothing fancy, whole-
some if not gourmet.
"Don't expect to get away
for just a few dollars,
though. Our food cost on
each visit was approx-
imately $18. For that we
had one medium pizza, one
salad bar, two milks, two
pops, one sandwich, one
small soft ice cream sundae.
"The more food you order,
the more tokens you receive
for the kids to go on rides.
When the tokens are gone,
quarters can be used, but on
our second visit, we limited
them to tokens only. That's
when 2-year-old Jessica, to-
kenless, scammed the es-
tablishement. Noticing that
the miniature. merry-go-
round had three animal
seats, as opposed to most of
the other rides that held
only one kid at a time, Jes-
sie just sat on a horsie and
waited til the other kids
started the merry-go-round
with their tokens. Chuck E.
Cheese, I owe you 17 quar-
ters. Let's see, that's ...

"Accolades to Michigan
Inn and its Chef Remy Be-
rdy! Their Ethnic Brunch
Buffets brightened the
summer season. With more
than a touch of class, each
Sunday morning found the
prestigious hotel's lobby
and adjacent restaurants
transformed into another
delightful setting for yet
another great 'ethnic' eat-
ing experience.
"Or so I'd been told by
friends who had tried to
get me out of my house on
my 'lazy' Sundays. They
reported tasty and un-
usual foods, elegantly of-
fered from seemingly
endless buffet tables — at
a very reasonable price..
"But it took the recent
Jewish-Israeli Buffet to fi-
nally get me there. Prom-
ises of mountains of tsith-
mes, felafel, potato-style
cholent and K-rations
(knishes, kugel, kishka,
etc.) had me up and running
through the hotel doors be-
fore 11 a.m.
"My friends were right:
The buffet, held from 10
a.m. to 2:30 p.m., offered the
finest of Jewish and Israeli
dishes, imaginatively
served under the smiling

eyes of a sculptured-in-ice
Fiddler on the Roof.
"A gazebo in the lobby
was filled with hallas and
wine, fruit and Israeli flags,
a candled menora and an
on-going, tape recording of
"Fiddler" show tunes. Palm
leaves decorated the
structure and voila — a
sukka!
