A resolution adopted at the meeting "urges HIAS to aid all Soviet Jews to resettle in the country of their choice" and called on the organization to adopt this policy "before the change in policy made by the Jewish Agency leads to a decline in emigration" from the Soviet Union. The UCSJ resolution also noted with "deep concern" that non-Jewish agencies and organizations will be helping theSe Soviet Jews excluded by the new Jewish Agency policy. The UCSJ gtressed that. its "main ob- jective is to maximize the number of Jews allowed to emigrate from the USSR while there is still a chance." At a ceremonytin Capitol Hill Tuesday, the UCSJ honored five members of Congress who were espe- cially active on behalf of Soviet Jews in 1981. The Congressmen are Sens. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) and Rudy Boschwitz (R- Minn.) and Reps. William Brodhead ( D-ML), Lawr- ence Coughlin (R-Pa.) and Michael Barnes (D-Md.). eluded their two-day meeting on Monday, said the plight of Soviet Jewry involves decrease in emigration, increase in harassment and arrests, and the banning of all Jewish and educational programs. The conference was or- ganized to address the "emergency situation now existing in the Soviet Union. The leaders hoped to "unite international efforts on behalf of the more than two million Jews in the Soviet Union, mobilize na- tional and local Jewish community leadership, up- date the public on current issues and impress upon them the need to return to their governments and have them immediately inter- vene with Soviet leader- ship" on behalf of Soviet Jewry. Genya Intrator, chairper- son of the Canadian Com- mittee for Soviet Jewry, said that a similar cam- paign will be launched in Canada. The two major points on which Israelis and Egyp- tians disagree relate to tourist installations in Sinai and the granting of visas to Israelis who want to visit Egypt. Cairo has announced that all tourists, including Is- raelis, who visit Sinai after Israel completes its with- drawal next April will be required to purchase $120 worth of Egyptian currency.
