The Secretary's brief re- marks on the Middle East were part of a 40-minute address to the United Na- tions General Assembly which opened its general debate Tuesday. Observers ' noted that Haig's Middle East reference conspicu- ously avoided mention of the Camp David accords, , contrary to previous years since the accords were signed by the U.S., Israel and Egypt in 1979. Haig's only other refer- ence to the Middle East in his speech was that the U.S. would continue actively its efforts "to strengthen and expand the cease-fire in southern Lebanon."
