Jackson Denies AWACS
Contingent Has Soft Spots

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Sen. Henry Jackson ( D-
Wash.) rejected the claim by
Secretary of State Alexan-
der Haig that the list of 50
Senators opposed to the
Administration's plan to
sell AWACS reconnais-
sance aircraft and other
sophisticated military
equipment to Saudi Arabia
was "replete with soft spots"
and that he could name a
dozen Senators who were
ready to listen to the Ad-
ministration's arguments
for the sale.

that the Administration has
misread the numbers from
the beginning," Jackson

had a majority."
Jackson made his com-
ments as he was about to
attend a luncheon of the Co-
alition for Strategic Stabil-
ity in the Middle East, a
new broad-based group op-
posed to the $8.5 billion
arms package sale to the
Saudis.
At a press conference
announcing formation of
the group, Father Robert
Drinan, a former Demo-
cratic Representative
from Massachusetts and
head of Americans for
Democratic Action
(ADA), said the 50 names.
on the list "are firm,"

though he noted that one
or two might "take a
walk."

He pointed out, however,
that Jackson and Sen. Bob
Packwood (Re-Ore.) said
last week that at least an-
other six Senators were
ready to oppose the sale.
