NEW YEAR'S GREETINGS

During these holy days We pause to re-
member the traditions that have strengthened us
in the past, to reflect upon our roles in life and to
look with hope toward the future.

Thus, as we turn our thoughts of the past toward
the year to come, I and my associates pledge
ourselves anew to maintain the highest standards
of service. Happy New Year!

Former USAF Chief Sees AWACS Threat

WASHINGTON (JTM —
A former head of U.S. Air'
Force Intelligence charged
Monday that the sale of
AWACS and enhancement
equipment for F-15s to
Saudi Arabia threatens the
existence of Israel.
"The AWACS airplane
represents the single
greatest piece of technical
advance in air defense since
World War II," Air Force
Gen. (Ret.) George Keegan
siad. He stated that, com-
bined with the extra fuel
tanks and the Sidewinder
air-to-air missiles for the 62
F-15s the Saudis bought
previously, this would re-
sult in "the most powerful
offensive combination of
weapons ever developed for
aerial theater warfare."
If Congress does not block
the sale, Israel would, by
1985 when the AWACS are
to be delivered, have more
enemy weapons facing it
than NATO has in Europe,
Keegan warned. -
The retired Air Force
General spoke at a press
conference at the Capital
Hilton launching the Co-
alition for Strategic Sta-
bility in the Middle East,
a broad-based group
comprising leaders of
labor, Jewish, Black and
religious organizations
and other opposed to the
$8.5 billion arms sales to
the Saudis. The co-
chairmen of the new bi-
partisan group are Clif-
ford Case, a former Re-
publican Senator from
New Jersey, and J. C.
Turner, president of the
International Union of

Operating Engineers.
Turner 'declared that the
sale is "totally unacceptable
to the American people" be-
cause it would result in a
danger to American secu-
rity by placing sophisti-
cated weaponry in an un-
stable country, because it
would threaten Israel and
because it breaks a promise
to Congress that this
equipment would never be
sold to the Saudis.
In describing the threat to

RUDI'S

Israel, Keegan said that
Saudi Arabia has been" and
"remains the nominal
leader" of the Arab confron-
tation states against Israel.
He said that after the 1973
Yom Kippur war, -these
states under Saudi leader-
ship devised an operational
plan to slice Israel in half by
moving some 1,000 tanks
into the West Bank through
Jordan overnight, some-
thing he said could easily be
done.
