NAHARIYA —NahariYa.
is a small resort town in the
Western Galilee, where life,
quiet and uneventful most
of the time, only becomes
hectic and dangerous when
the northern border
explodes and the town be:
comes the target of PLO
rockets.

Otherwise there are more
bicycles than cars, and the
residents are even-
tempered and unharassed.
Nahariya was founded by
German Jews fleeing
Europe in 1934, and today
there are about 30,000 in-
habitants living in neat,
modest houses.

Hadassah Bat-Haim
for many years was a
correspondent for the
Jerusalem Post, and
much of the book is cul-
led from her column "It
Occurs To Me," which
ran for 18 years. She
writes with sensitivity
and humor as she re-
counts her family life, the
sad episodes in the
shadow of some really
hilarious ones. The book
was published in Israel
with an attractive cover
designed by At -3c Ber-
lyne.

Hadassah's family settled
in Nahariya in the early
1950s, after making aliya
from Manchester, N.H.

The fire caused more than
$200 million worth of dem-

M.E. Exodus

Some 520,000-650,000
Arabs left Israel in 1948
during the War of Indepen-
dence. In 1948, there were
850,000 Jews living in Arab
countries. Today there are
fewer than 20,000, mostly
held against their will.

WASHINGTON — An-

publication, reported on
Aug. 31 that a recent fire in
Kuwait's main oil refinery
was caused by a bomb
planted by Palestinians at-

pressure on Kuwait:

Wish All Their Family, Customers & Friends

During the course of her
growing up, the reader
shares sadness as well as
joy, with the premature
death of Hanna's father;
and a terrorist attack on
Nahariya that turns an
end-of-year school party
into a memorial service. We
share the family's experi-
ences in two wars, meet a
constant stream of `accom-
to their home, and accom-
pany them on a trip to
pany
America — each incident
enlivened by Hanna's un-
inhibited behavior.

"Travels With Hanna," is
a warm-hearted book that
gives valuable insights into
small-town life in Israel's
Galilee, where the gentle
terrain and climate offer de-
lights for growing children.
The book is genuine, ex-
tremely amusing and liable
to give a better idea about
life in Israel than many
heavy tomes.

Like all small towns, it is
a microcosm of the world,
and one of its popular citi-
zens, Hadassah Bat-Haim,
has written a delightful
book — actually a family
saga of her life in the town.
It is called "Travels With
Hanna," the namesake
being her youngest daugh-
