The list changes somewhat from year to year, but many of the problems are peren- nials. The WEINTRAUB FAMILY Danny, Saul, Shelly Carol, Susie, Shelley ;Imo <1,) Wish the community a year of PEACE, HEALTH & PROSPERITY ► The following will be Is- rael's major concerns for the coming year as we see them, in order or priority: TO KEEP THE PEACE — The threat on the north-' ern border is reflected in the continued tension there. Peace is most precious to Is- rael, but repeated terrorist attacks, or obvious prepara- • tions for such attacks, may trigger a major Israel reac- tion. GOVERNMENT STA- BILITY — The narrow margin of Begin's majority in the Knesset encourages the opposition to keep up its sniping against the gov- ernment, and to seize every opportunity to carp and criticize. Israel 's govern- ment must protect itself from political attacks from within,. as well as from enemy attacks from with- out. INFLATION — Rising prices, increase in the na- tional debt; more money in circulation, widening of the trade gap all are elements of an inflationary spiral which Israel has been combatting. Are the recent improve- ments signs of a turn at last, or just temporary delays be- fore a new inflationary surge? RELIGIOUS - SECU- LAR CONFRONTATION — The many concessions procured by the small reli- gious bloc as the price for their support of the gov- ernment coalition have sharpened the conflict with the secular elements in the country and antagonized many who had previously been neutral in such con- flict. The differences of opin- ion will find sharp public expression. CARL ALPERT gradual promotion of har- mony and understanding between communities in Is- rael was set back by irres- ponsible political oppor- tunists, and the antagonism reawakened will disturb the atmosphere in the coming year. More time will be re- quired to heal the wounds that have been re-opened. RENEWAL OF AU- TONOMY TALKS — The chances of reaching agree- ment may seem slight, but both Egypt and Israel must remain at the conference table for resumed talks which had been broken off by Egypt almost a year ago. Patience and tolerance will be required on both sides. YERIDA — The great danger of the brain drain, the continued emigration of Israelis out of the country, is not so much_in the actual numbers who are leaving as in the undermining of na- tional morale which such yerida promotes. ENERGY — The entire economy of the country, not -to speak ofdefense, still de- pends on sources of energy outside Israel's borders. The search for new sources must continue, combined with a great campaign to cut down on local energy consump- tion. and experts in the field do not hide their concern. CRIME — Crimes of vio- lence, gang murders and or- ganized crime with roots in the dope rackets have be- come part of the scene in Is- rael. Major police and judi- cial actions will be required to stem this cancerous growth in Israel. Not a pretty picture, but remember, we have singled out the problems and headaches only. If we know what we have to face, we shall find it easier to find solutions. WITH THE U.S. — Israel's depen- dence on American support makes it all the more impor- tant that good relations be maintained. Will Reagan utilize this fact to wring political concessions from Jerusalem? Will the pro- or anti-Israel elements in Washington succeed in in- fluencing U.S. policy?
