Over the years Israel has
become a popular tourist
destination. Today, the em-
phasis has shifted from
Jewish tourism stemming
from religious, historical
and Zionist sentiments and
a return to roots, to secular
non-Jewish vacationers in-

To all this one must, of
course, add the important
and stable category of
Christian pilgrims.

a great deal to offer and is
well able to meet the compe-
tition of the other Mediter-
ranean countries. German,
Austrian and French vis-
itors in particular have
been coming here in droves
over the past two years.
Last year 1,750,000
tourists visited Israel.
This figure represents a
slight rise over 1979. The
first six months of 1981
brought 570,000 visitors
here, the same volume as
in corresponding months
of 1980, mainly from
Europe. However, there
has been a decline of
Jewish tourism from
North America. (Less
than 15 percent of the
Jews in America have
ever visited Israel.)
The recent shelling in the
North has taken its toll on
tourism in that area, but

parts of the country.
Scheduled pilgrimages, con-

have not been deterred. Nor
has there been an unusual
number of cancellations.

periencing a tourism boom
that has put it in the same
category as Greece, Spain

vacationland.
With the return of the
Sinai coastal resorts like
Nuweiba and De Zahav,
where the beauty of the
Red Sea Shores could be
enjoyed along with mod-

ally no competition in Is-

trade. Eilat itself has
undergone many
changes since its
pioneer-cowboy days.
It is to be hoped that the
Eilat of the 1980s will be
concerned not only with
good hotels, which are vital
for good tourism, but will
also concern itself with its
character, its cultural
amenities, in short with the
quality of life it offers to its
visitors. This is a challenge
not only to the authorities
in Eilat but also to the
whole image of Israeli
tourism.
