Hagana Builder Remembered •

By SHOSHANA CYNGEL

Service
Eliahu Golomb was one of
the founders of the Hagana
— the voluntary Jewish
self-defense organization
established inEretz Yisrael
primarily against Arab at-
tacks during the period of
the British Mandate.
It was from the Hagana
that Israel's present army
was to emerge with the Dec-
laration of Independence in -
1948. Golomb, who died in
1945, was a sort of Minister
of Defense of the future
state oflsrael, and one of the
outstanding leaders of the
Jewish population in the
land prior to the establish-
ment of the state.
Golomb was willing to go
out on any mission to which
he sent others. This exam-
ple was eventually to be one
of the hallmarks of the Is-
raeli army, in which -the
motto of the officers is not
'forward' but 'after me.'
Golomb wfts born in
Russia in 1893. He came
to pre-state Israel as a
youngster in 1909 and
was involved in political
affairs since he was 20
years old, as a Labor
Movement man.

succeed without an inde-
pendent Jewish armed
force, not an elite but
serving the whole popu-
lation. This was of pri-
mary importance to him
because without it the
Zionist revolution could
not come true.
Golomb had a double
function in the Hagana. He

was political representative
in Eretz Yisrael and abroad.
The Hagana did not have a
more powerful and convinc-
ing representative than
Golomb.
Golomb was also one of
the founders' of the Pal-
mach, the Hagana striking
force largely _based in the
kibutzim.

ELIAHU GOLOMB -
After terminating his
studies in the first graduat-
ing class of the well known
Gymnasia Herzliya inTel
Aviv, he went with his
friends to work in Kibutz
Degania.
In World War I, he helped : -
organize and serve in -the`
Jewish legion. In 1921, -
Golomb returned to Tel
Aviv. It was then that he -
started- organizing the
Hagana, which was to- be
the essence of his life-work
until the day he died.
Golomb devoted himself
wholly to the creation of a
Hebrew army, deeming it
indispensable to the auton-
omous, political existence
for which Israel strived.
His deep conviction _
was that Zionism - would -
not be realized by force,
