The town of Nahariya returns to normal after this
summer's terrorist rocket attacks.

NAHARIYA — There is
no mistaking the sound of a
rocket. Suddenly there is an
enormous CRACK as if the
sky had split open and a
brief moment of silence
when the air around seems
to shake.
On June 15, the first roc-
ket fell about 5 p.m., near
enough to rattle the win-
dows and shake the dust out
of the trees. It didn't need
the siren nor the Civil
Guard going round with
loudspeakers to tell us to
grab the children and get
into the shelters.
The second one was
nearer but less destructive.
It fell into the sea on the far
side of the stone pier that
separates the bathing area
from the little marina. A
huge waterspout rose hun-
dreds of meters into the air,
splashing swimmers and
sunbathers with spray and
spume.
Scores of holiday-
makers in this resort
town took their children,
their clothes and their in-
flated mattresses and,
shepherded by the life
guards, got quickly into
the building across the
road. (Some took only
their children. In the

was littered with thermos

outside we could see tall
columns of smoke rising in
the still summer air.
The whine of fire engines
was continuous. So too were
the voices of the police
broadcasting from their
circling cars: "Stay in the
shelters. Do not come out
into the streets."
One man who jumped into
his car to see what was hap-
pening was killed by a di-
rect hit. Two others died
outside their homes. Seven-
teen wounded were admit=
ted to the hospital but the

evacuated as the hospital
was hit too.
Extensive damage was
done to the hospital
maternity ward but there
were no casualties: Doc-
tors and nurses and the
whole of the administra-
tion went smoothly into
their emergency.routine.
They have had consider-
able practice during the
last few years.
People were talking in lit-
tle groups whenever there
was a lull which seemed

?" and "Did you
realize at the beginning?"
