Returning to the
darker side of reality,
Harold Pinter's
"Caretaker" proved a
success in the Beersheva
Theater production di-
meted by Geza Partos. All
the way back to the realm
of tragic sorrow, Hanoch
Levin's "The Trials of
Job" has been leaving
audiences with what
Mendel Kohansky, thea-
ter critic of the Jerusalem
Post, called the "fascinat-
ingly cruel theatrical ex-
perience" of the hero,
dying in terrible agony,
calling out to his friends,
"Please, don't leave me

The year's most controv-
ersial Israeli film, featured
and praised at the Cannes
Festival, "The Vulture," di-
rected by Yaki Yosha, co-
written with Yoram
Kanitilc,. tells the tale of a
soldier returning from
battle who allows himself to
be"talked into creating a
memorial album for the
mourning relatives of a
friend who was killed before
his- eyes.
From there, he makes the
writing of memorial albums
into a: business, putting him
into the role of vulture.

of a happy normal mother of
two daughters into a state of
inexplicable mental illness.

Another serious
minded Israeli art film
"The End of Milton Levy"
directed by Nissim
Dayan deals vividly with
the problems of the "o-
riental sub-proletariat."

In comedy theater, "Tel
Aviv-New York-Tel Aviv"
caught the flavor of Israeli
yordim in America but sac-
rificed attention to detail on
the altar of topicality. Simi-
larly, "The Last Striptease"
had pretensions of being a
political satire, but pre-
sented little more than a
stream of obscenities with-
out much rhyme or reason.
In film, director Ehud
Levanon assayed to spoof
the army radio station, with
some good moments but
lack of overall coherence.
Boaz Davidson continued to
copy his own success in
"Lemon Popsicle" and "Go-
ing Steady" with his latest
teenage sex comedy, re-
leased in English as "Hot
Bubblegum."
Theater-goers this year
also have been offered the
recently opened spectacle of
the Beersheva Theater's
production of Pirandellow's
"Six Characters in Search of
an Actor." Plays by Brecht
and Kafka adapted from the
German were also featured
during this past year on the
Israeli stage.
In addition, there were a
variety of Shakespearean
productions, including ex-
perimental modern
adaptations of "Twelfth
Night" and "Romeo and
Juliet."

Visiting artists of note
included a performance
by legendary Yiddish
comedienne Molly Picon,
still trouping at age 83,
and the superbly profes-
sional Actors Touring
Company of London who
presented Shakespeare's
"Measure for Measure"
and a two-part adapta-
tion of Cervantes' "Don
Quixote."

Other high points of the
theater year included a re-
vival of the 1959 hit "Little
Tel Aviv" nostalgically re-
calling the by-gone genera-
tion of pioneering immig-
rants to Israel and the Haifa
Theater production of
Odeon Von Horvath's
"Faith, Love, Hope," depict-
