"Since Golda died no
Jewish woman has risen to
take her place as a role
model," many young Jewish
women complain. It is cer-
tainly true that a sheer
force of presence and influ-
ence no woman alive can
equal the late Prime Minis-
ter of Israel. But there are
dozens of women active in
every sphere of Jewish life
who provide noble examples
of strength, intelligence,
achievement, and commit-
ment.
Here, in no particular or-
der, is my personal Rosh
Hashana list of admirable
Jewish women. I may dis-
agree vehemently with
some of them about the most
vital issues in their careers.
But I like every one of them
for their guts, energy, and
vision:
TRUDE
WEISS-
ROSMARIN, theologian,
editor. For decades the
editor of "The Jewish Spec-
tator" has called the shots
as she's seen them on mat-
ters of central importance to
the Jewish people. She has
written many catalytic
books on religious and polit-
ical issues, each one a
treasury of information and
clear thinking.
CYNTHIA OZICK,
writer. Brilliantly gifted,
Ozdck is among the finest
contemporary writers, ir-
respective of sex or ethnic
classification. She belongs
on this list in particular be-
cause she deals so fearlessly
with Jewish topics in her
work.
Her essays are gutsy at-
tacks on problems facing
the community today. And
her fiction introduces us to
Jewish characters who are
blessedly free of the cloying
nostalgia and dead-end
neuroses that afflict char-
acters created by so many of
our acclaimed Jewish male
writers.

GEULA COHEN, Israeli

politician, journalist. Cohen
is the outspoken (to say the
least) Knesset member who
was physically ousted when
Sadat came to speak to the
Israeli government. Al-
though a leader of the right
wing, she is also known to
espouse such radical causes
as the struggle for the ele-
vation of the status of the
Sephardim. Cohen is herself
one of the few Sephardic
women outside of the field of
entertainment to rise to
prominence.

ROSALYN YALOW,
scientist, Nobel Prize win-
ner. Of all the Jewish
Nobelists, and goodness
knows there are many, only
Agnon and Yalow have
been emphatically positive
about their Judaism.
Yalow's attitude is the more
praiseworthy because in her
position it is easy to duck
responsibilities to one's
people and hide behind
genius and scientific work.
Instead, Yalow has made a
point of standing tall as a
woman and as a Jew.

NECHAMA LEIBO-
WITZ, Bible commentator.
While some women whine
at their official exclusion
from the tra-
ditional,areas of Jewish
learning, LeiboWitz has
gone ahead and studied
what she wanted. So suc-
cessful has she been that
today even the tradi-
tionalists agree that
Leibowitz' commentary on
the Torah is probably the
best of this generation.
SILVA ZALMANSON,
Russian dissident. A rub
binic proverb says, "The re-
demption of Israel comes
about only through the
merit of the women." The
exodus from the Soviet
Union is remarkable for the
strength, spirit, and cour-
age of Russian Jewish
women. Zalmanson, among
the first prisoners of con-
science, is one of these
heroines in the classic mold.
