TAPUAH (JTA) — A major landmark in the pro- gress of Jewish settlement in, and Israel Defense Force control over, Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) will be completed this month: the trans-Samaria highway. Jewish National Fund bulldozers and earthmovers are presently completing the final stretch of this vital 70-kilometer project which will join the heavily popu- lated coastal plain of Israel directly to the Jewish set- tlements along the Jordan rift. At the same time, energe- tic settlement activity is going ahead at a number of sites along the route — Ariel, Tapuah, Emmanuel, Barkan — and officials say the road will be "a throb- bing lifeline" through the heart of Samaria. The highway carries alongside it water, electricity and telephone lines which serve the Jewish and some of the Arab villages in Samaria. The highway will have a major economic and so- cial impact on the lives of the settlers in the blazing hot Jordan rift valley, said Uri Baron, settle- ment aide to Defense Minister Ariel Sharon. It will cut down the time re- quired to drive to Tel Aviv from two-and-a-half hours to less than one hour. "This is a psychological revolution for the settlers," Baron said. It means that an evening out or with friends in the Tel Aviv area is no longer a major undertaking, but something that can be done comfortably and con- veniently, without circuit- ous driving through Jericho and Jerusalem. Baron said there was huge interest "by all sorts of people — not only zealous idealists" — in the prospects of living in Samaria settle- ments. He attributed this in part to ecological - quality - of - life considerations. The new highway, cutting and easing transport problems, would naturally spur this interest, he said. He also pointed to energe- tic progress on two govern- ment planned industrial parks near Ariel and near Barkan, both close to the highway. There was great interest among industrial concerns Baron said, and the government was having to carefully screen and select suitable firms to be accepted into these parks. The idea was, at least at the first stage, to furnish employment for Jewish settlers in the area, Baron explained. But, he had no doubt that within a rela- tively short time local Arab residents would also be working at factories to be put up at Ariel and Barkan. SYRACUSE, N.Y.
