Pianist Varani to Appear
in Music Study Club Concert

Music Study Club of Met-
ropolitan Detroit will pre-
sent pianist Flavio Varani
in concert 12:15 p.m.
Thursday (new meeting
day) at Temple Beth El. Va-
rani's concert will be dedi-
cated to the memory of
Esther Sibrack, longtime
board member and officer of
the club.
Varani first appeared in
public performance at age 7
in his native Sao Paulo,
Brazil, and by age 10 had
toured with the Brazilian
National Symphony.
A student of Magda Tag-
liaferro, he received a
scholarship in his teens to
study in France and Austria
and later traveled to Poland
and the USSR. At age 18, he
won first prizein the Inter-
national Chopin Competi-
tion in Majorca, Spain.
He studied with Rosina
Lhevinne at the Juilliard
School of Music, later
transferrinv to the Man-

pianist.
Frequently appearing at
Lincoln Center and Car-
negie Hall, he also per-
formed with Musica
Aeterna, with the Brooklyn
Philharmonic under Lukas
Foss, and has been a regular
artist at the Newport Music
Festival.
On the music department
faculty of Oakland Univer-
sity since 1972, Varani has
been a popular guest artist
on radio and TV network
shows as well as performer
with all of the orchestras in
Southeastern Michigan, in-
cluding the Detroit Sym-
phony Orchestra. Return-
ing to the Meadow Brook
Music Festival this past
summer, with the DSO he
performed the world pre-
miere of Stanley Hol-
lingworth's ?`Concerto for
Piano and Orchestra,"
commissioned by the festi-
val and conducted by
Neville Marriner.
